If for defense the 9mm ammo is cheaper but the .40 performance is better. I guess you could shot them 5 times with the 9 rather than 2 times with the .40 Quantity is not the same as quality so making pratice and real life count makes better quality.
Ball ammo aside the troops want larger calibers in rifle and pistol, so just like the big block crowd "there is no replacement for displacement" meaning displacing a large chunk of the bad guy.

i'm in the middle of buying a kimber pro target II 45 cal but i'm not using it for a concealed. i know kimber has some compact 1911 40's & 45's for carrying concealed.

Personally I like to keep to widely available calibers for defensive weapons in both rifles and handguns. Since were talking about handguns id stick with 9mm and .45, now im not saying that .40cal is hard to find, because its not..its becoming a very common caliber, but you will have no trouble finding 9mm/.45 anywhere. Unlike 357sig,10mm etc. which is kinda difficult to find in a wide range of loads.
These are my personal beliefs, not to offend anyones choice caliber.

there is only about 0.045 difference between a 9mm and a .40
there is about a 15% velocity increase with the .40 over the 9.
.357 Sig (which is a just a bbl replacement on a .40 S&W firearm) is 9mm bullets with .40 S&W velocities.
all velocity comparisons are based on 130 gr 9mm and 135 gr .40

I had forgotten about the .45 XD compact, I saw it on TV, they give you an extended mag as well as a short mag, so you have both full frame and compact in the same gun if I recall correctly. In an end of the world scenario, 9mm or .45 acp would be my choices, But I still love my .40 cal with 180 gr. HP. I haven't ever seen any lighter loads, were can you find lighter bullets at?
Has any body seen a .40 rifle or carbine????

The compact is a bit bigger than the sub compact.
I have a 9mm that is about the size of the compact. Its a cheap Hi-point.
My lymans book has reloading data for .40 rifle.

I carry a XD-40 sub. It's a sweet little gun, traded a Kel-Tec p-11 and a little $$ for it because the Kel-Tec was bad about stovepiping. The Springfield shoots great, never had a problem with it. I carry it concealed, but I wouldn't want it to be any bigger. Mines black.

sorry to get off topic of the xd's but have you looked into the new S&W MP Compacts yet? I have the 9mm compact and its been 100% so far and I never counted rounds, but im undoubtedly over 1k+ through the gun and its ate everything ive given it
My friend also has the XD .45 Compact and he loves it.

The only other pistol that has my attention at the moment is the walther pps, but its only in 9mm and its $150 more than the XD. The only thing attractive about the pps is I can break 3" clays at 100 yrds with a ppk.
