Re:I Hate Car Salesman!

When I sold cars (for a very short time ), I knew them inside and out. However, cars have always been a sort of a hobby with me. I don't mind if a salesperson doesn't know the specifics of a vehicle I'm shopping for as well as I do, as long as he/she doesn't just make stuff up as some of the stories on here indicate. To me, the salesperson is just there to run numbers back and forth between me and the sales manager working the deal, or to communicate with me if we are unable to come to an agreement right away. More of a facilitator than an advisor, I guess. Other dealerships may work in different ways, but that's how they usually work the deals around here.

Re:I Hate Car Salesman!

I have had my share of bad dealerships. We have a rather infamous Dodge dealer around here that only deals in high volume. When I was looking to get rid of my old Dakota I wen to them because of their low posted price. THat was a big mistake...

Immediatly when I pulled on to the lot I was stopped by a salesman that was roaming the lot. I told him that I wanted a 2500 or 3500 4x4 ETH/DEE. He said they didnt have nay, but they had a quadcab 5 Speed dakota, I told him many times I wasnted interested. But he basically made me drive it. When I got back he took me into the office at satarted drawing up all the papers to buy the truck, and he would not even tell me what the sticker price was, or what he would give me for my old truck. He stated that there policy was no talking about prices untill the prchase was already finalized ??? ???

So I expressed to him that I would not buy the truck, or anything from them ever again. So he got mad and had the dealer security escort me off the lot.... >

Re:I Hate Car Salesman!

I agree with Darrell, they all aren't bad. The sad thing is you tend to remember the things that really irratate you.

I tried to order my truck from 3 different Dealers before I found one that would do it. I could not believe they would argue with me and tell me I had to buy off the lot as Dodge would not build me one.

It is stuff like that makes you hate the process of buying, the guy that did get my business, told me over the phone his best price and I drove 3 hours to put a deposit on it.

I told him I want to buy a truck and he said he wanted to sell one. It really shouldn't be any more difficult than that.

Re:I Hate Car Salesman!

They aren't ***all*** bad. I thought I'd tell of a salesman "Dale" at a local ford dealer where I bought my CTD used. I looked into inventory on the net and found truck. Went to the lot and looked at it. Dale came up and asked if I needed help. Told him I was only looking and had to see if my old truck would be totalled by the insurance company. I told him I'd be back for a drive on the weekend, didn't have time right now. O.K. I looked him up on Saturday, drove it, and said still no word from State Farm. O.K. Came back after I got a check for the old truck, Dale was busy. Another salesman came up and I told him I was dealing with Dale. He said I'll get you started. While he was going back and forth with the offer (stupidest part of buying a car), Dale came by. I told him that we had asked for him and he said that it was that way to take care of customers. I'd wait!!! Anyways, deal got done. Dale comes out to put the temp tag in. I thanked him for the help. Then he asked "Did you ask for me when you came in?" YES? I was like, "is that really how it works?" He was like, its what goes around comes around. I don't know if he got any cut from the deal. I hope he got all of it. I wound up getting a Christmas card from Dale (never had that happen from any salesman). Too bad that I probably won't be buying another truck anytime soon.

He doesn't have much info but every time he hears something new he gives me a call. It does look like they will be for sale in the U.S., he just doesn't know how long it will take the EPA to approve the engine for the U.S. market. : I myself can't wait too much longer, but it's going to be pretty awesome to pull up to the Diesel pumps in a Liberty. ;D

DB

Re:I Hate Car Salesman!

My first post in this thread may have left the impression that I have a problem with salesmen. In all fairness to Luke and my salesman at Frontier Dodge, now Karmart Dodge, Burlington, Washington (unsolicited plug for them), my experience was a very good one. No B.S., what do you want, here's what we got, lets cut through the **** and talk turkey. There are good salesmen out there, but like good dealers (thinking of you Luke) they are few and far between and should be cultivated as they are the pearls of the trade.

~Dave

Re:I Hate Car Salesman!

Last time I went to a Dodge lot I was looking for a Club Cab 96 or 97 CTD to replace my reg cab. Salesman comes up as I get out of my truck and ask's if he can help.

The guy was odviously not from the south (no offense intended to anyone) by his accent. I told him what I was looking for and he said he wasn't familiar with the 12 Valve Cummins Turbo, but he knew they didn't have any 96 or 97 CTD's on the lot.

We talked for a few minutes and he took down my personal info along with what I was looking for in detail!, and afterwards I popped my hood and showed him a 12 Valve Cummins. After BS'n for a few more minutes he asked what I did for a living (being 19 and wanting to buy a CTD ) I explained that I was in school and very near getting kicked out of my GM ASEP techincal program for lack of a sponsor and nearing first co-op session. Well it just so happend that a Caddy dealership was ajoined to this Dodge lot and within 10 minutes I was sitting down with the Service Manager. 4 Days later I had my sponsor that kept me in my program! ;D

Re:I Hate Car Salesman!

My dealer didn't quite know enough either.. especially how to drive the rig. When I went in to pick it up after he "prepared it" I found a nice sloshing of touch-up paint all over the front left corner.. Presumably where he RAMed it into a building and tried to cover it up after purchase.

My favorite quote from him after purchase was... Wow that stereo sounds great, I didn't see the CD Changer in there... I guess he also missed the Fosgate 300 punch, Infinity amp / speakers and MTX subs under the rear seat! ;D

Handed me the keys w/ keyless entry and didn't notice the aftermarket alarm either, which was valet switched off.. with the switch well under the dash..Found that one a year later *grin*

Aside from the front-end thing buying from him was pretty painless, getting service from the dealer... thats the tough part. BTW it took me 6 months to find that used 24v in 2000. Not easy to find a low mileage year old CTD in MA
