I Hate Car Salesman!

Ok, hate is a strong word (maybe "heavy dislike&quot and maybe all car salesman aren't like this...

Go over to a dealership I've never been to before (In a different town because of college) to pick up a '02 2500/3500 brochure. Here's the conversation

Me: Yeah, I'd like to get a brochure on the 2500 and 3500.
Salesman: Sure, but I can do one better...got a 2500 I can show 'ya.
M: No sir, just want a brochure.
S: What engine you lookin for...the Hemi or the Diesel (neglected to even mention the V-10!)
M: Don't know...just would like a brochure.
S: Sure thing man...but you know the 1500's are cheaper and you can get a HEMI in 'em.
M: Yeah, but 1.) Heavy loads and stronger parts are the reasons I need a 2500 or 3500, and 2.) You can only get an automatic with the Hemi in the 1500.
S: Sure, but you can only get an automatic in the HD trucks too.
M: No sir, I believe you can also get an NV4500 5-spd (that's what I said...NV4500...think I blew his mind.) with an optional 4.10 rear end
S: Never heard that before...but don't think that's right.
(Didn't make a remark to that...)
S: Well, how soon you lookin' to buy?
M: Just came for the brochure.
S: Well, what can I do to earn your buisness.
M: Nothing sir. If I need ya, I'll be back.

At this point, he started talking about they are the best dealer around and if you want to custom order somthing to come here...kept on talking and I just walked out!

Ok...well, maybe it wasn't that bad, but the guy just really ****** me off...kept rattlin on and didn't know what he was talking about.

Also, last year, when I was at a dealership in my hometown, a Salesman there tried tried to tell me "that the Dakota handled better than other small trucks because it is front-wheel drive".

Justin.
Re:I Hate Car Salesman!

Not all dealers and salesman are bad.. but some sure are...

Here is my story.

I was at a dealer in Eastern Washington and looking for a 12 valve 5 speed 4x4 cummins. Year, body and color did not really matter. A salesman said he would find me one and give me a call. after 5 calls for 24 valve automatics I told him not to call me unless it had a manual transmission. He finally got my truck in, I test drove it and filled the paperwork out. I came back the next day to finalize the loan and take the truck home and they had sold it to someone else that payed $1k more. He promised to find me another one, I told him I would never be back at this dealer for ANY reason, and would never refer anyone here.

A friend told me to call the truck dealer in Kellog, ID (I don't think we are supposed to mention names?) and I spoke with a young salesman that was not very knowledgeable, but actually went out and walked around the lot looking at the trucks as he was on his cell phone. He found my exact truck I was looking for and confrenced in the financing specialist. I drove a few hundred miles the next day to take the truck home. I was more than happy with the service and salesman at the dealer in Kellog, ID. I will continue to buy every vehicle from them.

Re:I Hate Car Salesman!

It really doesn't bother me if a salesman isn't exactly "knowledgeable" in the vehicle he is selling...AS LONG AS he doesn't start spewing out stuff he has no idea he is talking about!

If you don't know what you are talking about...keep your mouth shut!

Oh the other hand...I'm sure the overwhelming majority of car/truck buyers know even less than these salesman, and a little B.S. goes a long way towards selling a vehicle.

Justin.

Re:I Hate Car Salesman!

Justin, Justin, Justin. You just don't understand. You got a free, no cost to you (except for some wasted time) demonstration that you just visited one of those dealerships you don't want to do business with. See, instead of investing some more time and money with these individuals, you quickly discerned that you wanted nothing further to do with them. On to the next dealer. Instead of getting mad, you should be relieved that he showed his colors so early in the game.

Personally, I would have (and have done so in the past) informed him that because of his poor sales technique and obvious lack of caring for WHAT the customer wants, he just lost a large sale. And, if you'd done so in front of other sales and management personnel, perhaps the person in question might have gotten the point. Failing to do this, you've accomplished nothing but be po'ed at a jerk. He doesn't understand why he didn't get you diverted to something you didn't want. Next time, tell him. Somewhere along the line, some sales people seem to think that the customers line up at the door waiting for the sales person to dispense scraps and we just prostrate ourselves before them with opened wallets, saying thank you for giving us your precious time. We have to educate these types. Sorry for the long diatribe but it really irks me when I hear about these types of dealings with sales personnel. You really ought to be around when I walk into a store and get what I want and then get ignored by cash register people. ;D ;D It's fun being a old phfart.

Re:I Hate Car Salesman!

When I was looking for a truck I had a choice of either a GM/Chebby dealership or a Ferd Dealership here in town. Back then I wanted a ferd anyways so off to the dealer I went. I met some dealer on their used lot (I can't afford a new one yet) and told him what I was looking for. 4X4, Diesel, Standard. Gave him my number and looked at several more vehicles in the yard. Didn't find anything I particularily liked, and this salesman followed me around like a mutt. He was some kind of drug rehab patient that the dealer hired. I finally had enough of this character and hiked off the lot only to have him try to con my mom into thinking her Jeep diesel was out of date and she needed a new vehicle and he tried the whole spiel on her... A few days later my phone rings. Apparently he found the perfect truck for me. So I go to someone's house to meet the character and peek at the truck. There was this old worn out pile of crap F250 2WD Automatic Diesel. Under the hood there were burnt wires, leaks, etc. It made a horrible squealing noise when it was running and 80% of the electrical didn't work. And the price!!! $7000.00!!! Thanks but not thanks. A few days later, phone rings, same story: "I have your dream vehicle here." So I asked him "What is it?" "Exactly what you asked for!" : So expecting a vehicle more of my expectations I made tracks to the dealership again. There I found him and he promply led me to an F150 Gaspot. :P Eventually he convinced me to take it for a test drive, but I didn't even think about liking it. At the end of the test drive I told him that he could stuff it where the sun don't shine and not to call me anymore. Then I went and bought my Dodge from a friend. I thought my salesman nightmare was over. Not quite. He called me again that he had some kind of "Super deal" on another gasser. I told him I found the perfect vehicle myself wuthout his help, and that I couldn't be happier with it . On top of that I told him I now owned a Dodge ;D That really got to him. I never heard from him again!!! ;D Just my story...

Re:I Hate Car Salesman!

When I was thinking about buying one of these trucks, after being on here a while, learning my stuff. I went down to Chesterfield Dodge, a five star dealer in Richmond, Va. The sales guy tried to tell me that the Cummins did not have a TURBO!!! We walked out to the lot and I read to him off the 2500 badge, "Cummins 24 Valve TURBO Diesel", then asked him if that was a lie. He said he wasn't familiar with that. He got the picture that I wasn't happy with him, spewing lots of stuff, but no reall good information. He asked if I had a problem with him. I said "Yeah, you don't know anything about what you're trying to sell me." His resonse was he couldn't know everything about every vehicle because they sell so many different kinds. That, to me is NO excuse. If you're gonna sell it, you better know about it. I guess it's like someone else said, they think we NEED them. Well they're wrong and they sure didn't get my business.

Chris

Re:I Hate Car Salesman!

While I was over at the GM dealer the other day picking up some parts for the Duramax intake, I heard a conversation between a salesm n and a potential customer.

The customer asked the guy; "What do you think of the 24 valve Cummins?" My ears perked up for the answer.

Salesman replies..."Oh they do not have valves, they have direct injection and thats what makes them so darn loud."

You could tell by the customers look he knew a lot more then the sales dude. He just clammed up and left. :

Speaking of sales...I might be selling my truck in the near future.

Re:I Hate Car Salesman!

S. Jersey is home of the "VULCHERS"!! In the winter time it looks like a trench coat convention with all of them standing outside waiting for their next victim. When I was looking for my CTD last year, I asked the guy (very young, and inexpereinced) if they had any 2wd quad cab CTD's His reply"WELLLLLLLL I am not sure ???" he just kinda looked at me I said "can you check?" as I am sitting there waving cash in the air. He comes back out "well we have a 4x4 reg cab st in the show room. I said "CYAH"! This guy wanted to sell my what hey had in stock. I crossed over into PA and went to a dealership, guy came out asked me if he could help me, I told him, he said, "cmon let's build you one"! He got the sale. NO BS,NO HASSLES,ETC. It was a nice quick deal.
