how to quickly paint bare drywall?

new house, garage walls finished, but not painted.

got some "drywall primer sealer" from Wally-World (i know - cheep) for $25 for 5 gals.
got that instead of paint because i thought it would cover better.
had to lay some in closet (built shelves from wood builder left) and thought it would do good on bare wood. not.

got one coat on in garage.
looks pretty thin. rolled over it a few times to cover up the grayish paper.

got 1 wall, 1 coat done.
got 2 more big walls, and the ROOF yet to start.

anyway to make it faster, and get it thick on the roof?
or will it take 3 coats?

Prime it then paint it, if you paint it any colour other than white get the primer tinted to match then it will only take one coat of paint over the primer.

Drywall primer is PVA. Poly vinyl acetate. It's not a good primer for wood. It's very thin and is formulated to seal drwall texture. It will probably not bond to wood very well and will eventually peel. Use the correct material for the job. PVA has almost no pigment. If you are going to use a walmart product use zap2 it's a latex based material with high solid pigment.

What spunbearing said, and rent an air-less paint sprayer.

ended up with KILZ from Lowes, i never have luck at Wally World, always something provided by the lowest bidder for thier shelves.

Dude at Lowes got he a HUGE nap roller, and I put ~7 gallons of KILZ on 3 walls and the ceiling of a 2 car garage.

looks good, except i got tired and let it get on floor, gonna paint floor after concrete cures.

tks for the advise, esp SpunBearing - I think PVA stands for Paint Very Almost water. the KILZ covered more in 1 coat than the Wally World paint did in 2. i thought i would have to paint on Sunday, but got it all done today.

I actually prefer the wally world zap 2 primer over the kilz. It has more pigment and has excellent adhesion. Another great primer is ace hardware stain halt. One of the best I've used for adhesion. If you ever have to seal a really serious stain such as a popcorn ceiling that has turned brown from cigarette smoke you'll see why I no longer use kilz. The best product for that kind of situation is called zero-lac. It's a shellac based primer that you thin and clean up with denatured alcohol. It brutal on the lungs even with a respirator but one coat and you're done. With kilz it takes several coats to keep heavy stains from bleeding. Glad you got it done.
