I just purchased a new pair of Toyo Open Country H/T tires in LT245/75R16 and they feel pretty mushy. I've heard that it takes a few miles for new tires to break in and stabilize. My question is, about how many? I've got about 700 miles on these and they still swing and sway more than I like.

I would think by 700 to 1000 miles they would be as good as they are going to get?

Check the pressures on them and the steering and suspention parts.

I put on new tires once and next thing I knew, I needed a new steering shaft. for some reason it drove fine with the old wore out tires but the new ones were all over the road untill I replaced the steering shaft.

air pressure could be key, look at the rated max inflation and start there, I would not go more than 5 lbs over that, and then start steping down in 5 psi increments, find the sweet spot for the front first, the rears second. But : you do not want to inflate so much that you are not riding on the whole tread or you will wear out the centers too fast, or the shoulders.

The second set of tires I had put on my frontier were rated for 51 psi, 2200 pounds per tire. the tire tech aired them to 25 psi..

One thing I have learned over the years, anytime someone else touches my truck, I check their work.

never heard of breaking in tires before, been thru a lot of tires never had any issues other then low air pressure

I think you might have another problem.

All I can EVER remember after getting a new set of tires installed is "WOW, I forgot what this thing handles like with decent tires on it!".

My current tires are Toyo MTs, and they were terrible until they broke in. They handled on cornering like they were all flat, and I didn't dare take an off-ramp at normal speed. After about 700 miles, they were starting to feel pretty decent. They are an aggressive mud tread, and I wouldn't have expected your HTs to act the same. They were the worst of any new tire I've had. Hopefully yours will improve soon.

I mounted them on the rear so steering may be an issue but I doubt it. Same old tires are still in the front as before. They are rated for max load at 80psi and I specified 65psi when they were mounted but I'll re-check the pressure today and maybe bump it up to 80psi for a while. I recall years ago that we had a new set of Coopers on the farm truck and it was swing & sway city for a while until they settled in (or we got used to them?) and I've read of others who experienced that same. Just hate to hook a trailer to a truck that doesn't feel stable.

When I went to mudders they felt squishy and it still feels squishy really I just got use to it .... It's the big lugs.




I hope that gives some insight into my experiences.

put new skins on my saturn today in the front. Thing rides like a dream(as good as a saturn will) with about 40 miles on the tires. Same with my truck when I had 6 new tires on it. Never heard of a break in period in 18 years as a mechanic though, unless the break in means letting the new tires groove into a worn out front end? just my .02

I read somewhere that it takes 5000 to 10000 miles to fully set new tires. I would think this would be kind of a long break in. It may have been for highway ribs but I can't recall. I would think they should be broken in by the first rotation at 5000k for sure.

My toyos felt much flexier than the other two brands i had on my truck when i had it.. but they were m/ts..

Whats the weight rating, load rating and sidewall ply on that particular tire you got?

No big lugs on these tires. H/T highway pattern.

These tires, made in China, are 10 ply rating, load range E, 2-steel belts & 2-poly belts under the tread, 2-poly plies on the sidewalls, and have a weight rating of 3042# single @ 80psi.

I checked the pressure today and they're still at a solid 70psi so no low pressure issues.

My new tires acted squirrely for a while. Seems like the back end drifts a little if I cut it hard all of a sudden. I've got 700 on them and it is already getting better. They are 305/70/17 Terra Grapplers. E rated.
