Yep, Gorgeous critter. Looks like he could haul 3 people in and back. Trailriding is the Wife and my thing also. That's our speciality we deal in at the ranch in our different training packages for outside horses and mules. My wife is a converted Foxtrotter rider. Started on one as a child. We still have 4 Foxtrotters at the house in addition to our mules. But I sold one of that four 2 weeks ago I just have to get him finished.

All you horse people know that the best thing a mare is for is to make a mule.

They don't call them mountain canary's for nothing sure footed little boogers they are.

Mares LOL lesson one don't take mares as a pack horse unless you want a problem if your going to have mares every horse you take better be a mare.

This is JD's mule. I've got one of those mares. Everything within 300 yards knows when she is in cycle due to the screams, stomps and other carrying on when she is in the pasture with the herd. She is due to drop a mule foal around the end of May.

mcoleman.

Sharp looking mule! I had friends who bred mules for many years in PA. I got a kick out of listening to the newborns brea the first time. To me that's kind of a special moment.

I am also a horseperson. I have Shire Drafts. My stud is registered and bred out of the English Shire Society. I have 3 young Shire mares, soon to be bred as springtime has now arrived. I also have 2 Standardbred mares. I am planning to cross them with the Sire, develope a new sport breed.

I mostly drive my horses, have a nice buggy from Herbs shop and also a buckboard. Break them using a jog cart like those used in the racing industry. When I ride, I have a nice Haggis saddle. Do a little show driving now and then, also have done some competitive and endurance riding with the standardbreds. May do that again when I get a shire/standardbred sport horse.

I think JD said his Dad is over 6 foot tall. So that's a pretty good sized doodle donkey right there. Mine is only 15.2 or so. And the Wife's is just 14HH.

from the fall of 97 to 4/98, I was working for a company that runs a "boot camp" program for convicted juvies.( VisionQuest LTD.) We travelled from Uvalde TX to Minneapolis Minn on horseback. Most of the "counsulors" rode horse, we put the kids on mules and mustangs. The horse were faster, the mules less skittish about most things ( tho after a month on the road, it was hard to spook any of them) We also had a string of Belgian Draft Mules pulling 7 reconstructed Cavalry Supply Wagons. They were nuts, spooked at anything and everything....wind, their own shadows, each other....
Those things were HUGE also.... Had to stitch up a cut on ones poll and had to stand tip-toe in a truck bed next to it to reach .....I tried not to have too much to do with them, looked like too much work..

The mules did better at things like crossing the Mississippi River Bridge in Louisianna Mo., the horse did better at chasing off dogs and in traffic....

Thats a stock pic of the small wagontrain they run year round , makes a loop around southern TX...

My mule doesn't chase off dogs. She rolls them with her hind leg if they get close enough. I've casually throwed that out there for bicyclists that refuse to follow the posted rules of the trail at Bar K. They move over pretty quick.

I was riding a Morgan/Arab Cross on that trip( my retired Mounted LE mount), and when we were near Swan Iowa, some jerk let his Two Rotties out as we were passing his house.. they charged the wagons, and the idiots drafts strated freaking and getting ready to bolt. The owner stood there laughing ...Two of the other guys rode up on the team, and I positioned myself between teh dogs and the wagons.
We chased teh rotties back into the driveway, and my MARE(bless thecranky thing) proceeded to strike one square on teh head, one dead rottie, and as we turned to leave, the other got a double-barrel shot, not sure what its outcome was.
the owner called the sheriff on us, but he didnt know we had a State Trooper escort watching the whole thing..... we kept moving and I am not sure what the final outcome of it was...
