BOATNIK I wish my fireplace heated the house. 2 years ago My heat pump went out on superbowl sunday and I had to heat the house with the fire place. Half a cord of wood later and the den was in the eighties with the rest of the house trying to freeze the pipes.

Fireplaces and wood stoves work well only when you can throttle the air flow thru them for only what the fire needs... any more than the minimum air is just lost heat. Old fashion fireplaces & wood stoves heat only by radiation which means that you gotta stand in front of them to get one side warm while the other side freezes. If you're stuck with a conventional fireplace, put glass doors on it to stop the hurricane of air from sucking heat out of your house. It still won't be very efficient but you may get a little warm air convected to other parts of the house. You can't do much with a leaky wood stove if it's not designed to be airtight.

If you've gotta buy firewood, get a pellet stove. They are safer and more efficient. If you can get free firewood, go for an airtight woodstove.

Have you tried just blocking the registers in the unused rooms? Most can be closed, if not, some stiff cardboard and handy mans helper (duct tape) should do the trick. This should direct the heat only to the area you want. Not 100% fool proof but should help.
