And I was looking forward to putting on my 6 sizes too small dress blues from the navy (think Cracker Jack Man), painting my death face on, taking out my .22LR in the predawn hours tomorrow and "whacking" the thing. Guess all I really need is a saw! (Can I still put my dress blues on and paint my face?)

Rob I have the same problem in my back yard, about 26 miles southeast of you, with a newly planted live oak.
A nice spiral pattern around a 4 in tree trunk. Tell me if you decided on a non-lethal method and if it worked...

That was the way I read it the first time....
I don't have any trees in my yard but still have problems with woodpeckers. They knock holes in the siding, bang on the flashing, poke holes in the dog food bag, etc. I need to pick up a pellet gun....

Now I hope we don't have any DNR officers lurking about here.... he he he.
Use the .22 with CB caps, an extremely slow and quiet round, just get into a good position where you can snipe him with the tree as a back stop. The same technique can also be used with a pellet gun.
I plead the 5th the whole way, however if I were to do it in town thats what I might do (if it were legal, of course it's not)
Now if you live out a ways like I do than I would (once again if it were legal ) Blast it with my trusty old Browning BPS, or the 12 ga. 870, or the Browning .22, or the Ruger.....he he he....This is fun
No really we have cedar siding and they wreak havoc on it. The only cure we found is a nice little grey pill!

Even one shot out of my 7mm Rem Mag and I doubt anyone would be able to place the shot.

Re: How do you get rid of a woodpecker?
You could get some termites......they like wood. Or maybe find him a girlfriend.
I know first hand the damage they can do. There used to be a bunch of them around here drilling into our fruit trees. It was so bad on the older trees the bark peeled away.
It is my understanding that a New Red Ryder BB gun or one with a new spring works just OK. But the flopping bird always manages to head to the neighbors for help unless you get a head shot. Gee I wonder whats wrong with that bird? Ah he probably got into a fight. The high powered pellet gun works great, downside is they are actually louder than a CB cap. But the pill wont go as far as a 22. For some reason those Peckers dont like hangin around here anymore. Good Riddance.

How about digging up a nice fat nightcrawler and injecting him with rat poison and planting him in a hole????? The pecker will see a big fat worm wiggling and won't be able to resist. Maybe the writhing worm would fall out of the hole though. Hmmmmmmmmm

Top, I laughed so hard at your "camo" post my wife banned me from the puter for a day! I can just see you painting your face and sneaking around like "Appocalipse Now". What a mental picture!
Poor birdy!
