How bad is this for my tires?

Working on the injector pump R&R, or any truck with big tires, I like to air down the front tires to make the truck kneel and have better access to everything. Just yank out the valve cores and drain 'em.

How bad is it to leave the tires like this? Not forever, just for a few days or something. I don't really feel like taking the wheels off to put it on jackstands to lower it...but I will if it's that bad for the tires.

I dont think it would them as long as your not airing down to the point of radically bending the belts on the side walls.

You'd be surprised how many shops do this on the taller or lifted trucks. I've done it on occasion for injector swaps and such. Haven't had a tire problem yet.

OK cool. ...and yeah, I'm talking totally aired down, as in taking the valve core out!

This is probably bad, but I took my tires off once on my old ford and sat it on the rotors to get it as low as I could. My engine lift was needing some help.

Don't think it would hurt for a few minutes, but days??? No way I'd do that.

I was just thinking of the way the tires are aired down on hardcore offroad vehicles. Granted, the tires gets moved around so the belts dont get set in a certain bind.

Aren't most off-road tires bias ply and not radial? I'm not sure how that affects things.

Not all off-road tires are bias ply. On my TJ, I have MT/rs and I air them down to about 4-8 offroad. To be honest, if you don't go as low as to blow the bead, I dont see how it would be THAT bad for it.

A flat tire, radial or bias, that sits with the weight of the vehicle on it for more than a few hours will, probably, develop a "bruise" that will show up later as a seperation, probably months after you have forgotten about letting it sit flat.

I have seen many sidewalls crack open, after sitting flat for a couple of days.

I know some have done this and escaped unscathed; but, it is not a good habit to develop.

I never do this, but if nothing else, put jackstands under it, and then let all the air out of the tire and have the jackstands just hold the rim barely off the ground.

I did this when I changed my turbo, but I had the rotor resting on a piece of wood.

OK thanks for all the suggestions guys, based off what you guys and some other people said, I'm just gonna set it down on jacks. I just hate having to re-torque all the stupid lugnuts on this thing!

When I wrenched for a living, that's what I always did when working on trucks...Ben
