It appears the cyclists were occupying both lanes. Was the officer driving on the wrong side of the road to force vehicles to the far right? Was the officer stationary or moving along side the cyclists? Was the officer behind the cyclists to protect them from approaching traffic from behind, and tried to move up and intercept the drunk, but wasn't able?

To me, there are quite a few scenarios and as many questions. Seems we're very quick to jump to conclusions. All we have is a brief newspaper article and a single snapshot.

With only one picture, I'll save comments, but I'm definitely skepticle. At least happening in Mexico, there's a good chance he saw plenty of justice before he made it in front of a judge.

Wow, that is very sad.

I hope the driver gets due justice, but regardless it isn't going to bring an innocent cyclist back.

I agree with Motorjock. It appears that the officer was driving in the opposite lane to force cars to the side.

Andy, lets not be raggin' on the cop when we dont know the full story. The officer may not have had time to react.

Say the dude was doing 100+, how much time is there to react? Im no expert, but it isnt alot.

The cop must have thought they were playing chicken but he and the bikers lost, he was leading the pack of bikes to protect them and he bailed.

The drunk should be hung for sure but the cop needs to go away also. He was the only thing between the bikes and the drunk and he should have done his job. Top thinks I am being hard on him? Not even close, it is a wonder the bikers did not rip both the drunk and the cop apart.
You sure assume a lot for one picture

Of course, and we have to remember that hind sight is 20/20. Any sane person who could know in advance that something horrible such as that was going to occur would do anything in their power to stop it (cop or not).

if the cop could have blocked the crash you might have just had to cars flying into the bikers and not one.

It's very sad- I bike, and have been nicked 3 times (2 hit& runs)- very minor brushes with cars where I ended up in the bushes, only one guy stopped. He drove me home and felt terrible about "running me over". One bad hit. A lady ran a red light at 4:00 PM in August. I was in the bike lane and going with traffic. She hit the brakes at the last second and tagged me square-on. I bounced 30 feet. She told the cops that I was going the wrong way, on the sidewalk, with my lights off, in the dark. Cop was cool, he asked her, "Geez, ma'am, how long ago did you hit him?"
She and I both ended up getting rides. Different destinations. Both institutions (mine, medical; hers, correctional ).

Holy crap, I think Larry and I will finally agree on a topic semi regarding LEO's this time!

The police are not REQUIRED to protect anyone. It is not required that they take a bullet for someone, take the brunt of a crash, or even protect you from a criminal. There are court rulings that specifically state that (most recent one that comes to mind is Castle Rock vs Gonzales).

The driver should either rot or fry. Who knows the whole story from the LEO's end of things. No telling how fast the guy was going, the officer could have certianly been seriously injured (why do we think that cops can wreck and come off any better than any of us).

Maybe it is the 3000 plus pound cage the LEO was wearing vs the 3 oz spandex of the riders.

that photo is terrible, i CANNOT stand bikers, that dont MIND the rules of the road. but these guys had a police escort, i feel the ESCORT should have done more.

i see it like this.. highschool prom girls chaperone (father) will see the highschool football player coming at his daughter about to get in a "romantic wreck" the (father, chaperone) will do all he can to stop that HS kid from causing havoc, if he has to throw himself infront of him i am sure he will..

i believe the officer should have done more. but that is just from looking at the picture and not knowing ALL sides of the story.

are you referring to bikers who ride in the road and take up a lane?

I know in most states, bikes are considered vehicles and are to be given the same right of way as cars. so technically they are allowed to be there...in MOST states. I have know idea about where they are. BUT they were in a organized race, so really, weather or not they were minding the rules of the road doesnt matter.

as far as the escorts go, I have done many races that have escorts, they arent there to protect the bikers in the sense that they have to jump in front of a bullet, they are there to provide a rolling caution sign, thats it. chances are, the cop was probably off duty looking for some OT, and driving next to a group of bikers sounded like an easy paycheck. he was probably mentally off somewhere else, and this absolute nut job came out of nowhere and took these bikers out. NO ONE can prepare for that.

when I posted this, I was simply pointing out that this was an insane story, in hindsight I should have posted the cropped pic to leave the cop out of it.

ok not necesarily mind the rules but have commen sense, you run stop signs on you bicycle i will do everything i can to scare the patooty out of you, i will not hit you but ill get close. 2 lanes roads with an 8 inch shoulder are not a place for cyclist there are appropriate places to ride and i will not bother you at all there.
