Hog Hunting

All right all you Southern Boys!
Looks like I will be movin back down to Florida (havent lived there since I was 6) and goin to work on a BIG ranch. Anyhow, wantin to do some hog huntin and was wonderin what ya'll thought about the ol' .243 Win. Thats my deer gun and I can put a bullet where it needs to be! Shot Placement is the key!! But will I look like a fool totin a little ol' rifle like that around, my other options are my .45 Long Colt Revolver, .54 Cal. Muzzleloader, and my bow, or a slug gun, but I really want to use the bolt gun. Ok guys let er rip!!!

I have shot LOTS of hogs with a 243. I ain't saying you can shoot em at 300 yards but that gun does fine at your average range. I shoot a sakko 243 with the Hornady ligth mag in a 100 grain bullet. NO PROBLEMS. Like you said, shot placement is the first step. Good luck.

Biggest hog I've ever killed was with a 22-250, one shot. It was on a lease in Texas where hogs were considered a "varmint" they wanted all killed that you saw. I was actually coyote hunting. He weighed around 4-500 lbs. I have also have killed several with a .223 with a 40 grain bullet. Put the crosshairs on their ear, come down about 2 inches and back about 2 inches and squeeze.

.243?

Got a model 788 Remington with that caliber, its more than enough gun for even body shots at anything less than 150 yards, well maybe 100, bullet is a bit light, but anywhere behind the ears and head.. its a heck of a caliber..

.243 should be enough. If not, keep that hog-leg strapped to your hip.

Killed one with a .17 Remington once. It wasn't but 20-30 yards away and a fairly small hog but it did the job. Plenty of Javelina kills with the same gun, those are the real varmint. I'd say a .243 will work fine.
