History Channel Program.....linemen
Hey Last night i sawa program on the History channel about Lineman. Did anyone see it?? Now I went to school for electrical technology but this is one area we didn't spend much time on. Mostly motor control and commercial wiring.
THese guys have 600,000volts in their hand. Safe or not you got to have a big set to handle that. The height alone gets me too.
Did you see the pole that attaches to the line arc before they make contact???
I was toooo jittery for that field, that is why I am no longer in it.
Then what really impressed me was if you got within so many feet of a ground while on the lines,YOU BE FRIED
I am talking about not even touching ground, just be near it.
I do not know what is worse, the Alaskan Snow Crab fishery or these dudes????!!!!!

Did it show them fixing lines from a helicopter?
Hovering that close to 600,000 volts, strapped to the skids,
knowing that a slight change in the wind and your blown into the lines.
I'm jumpy testing a 9 volt with my tongue

I personally have not been close to that kind of voltage, i work 138,000. i do know a couple of guys that have done that kind of work, they say you can't really tell your body is at 500,000 volts, except when you open your mouth you draw arcs between your teeth, said it makes you sterile for close to a year. btw i'll take line work over crab fishing those guys are crazy.

J O K E but it looks like it got deleted!!!
Yes PHOX there was some helicopter work shown on there. SOmething about hovering with a big whirling blade and 600,000 volts just doesn't mix for me.
Linetrash in a bucket yes, much safer than Crab fishing but there are guys that literally crawl on these. To me that is a toss up!

And doesn't the wind from the helicopter rotor make a lot of static electricity and they have to ground the copter before they even touch anything? I thought I remembered seeing that too. They said something about electrocution JUST from the static electricity!

wind from does make ststic , those guys are using that wand to electrify themselves and the helicopter to the voltage of the line. when i worked from a helicopter it was building new line, you wait for the pilot to touch the skid to what ever you are getting onto or off of,if you dont you will get an uncomfortable jolt you learn quickly.

did not see the program, but when I worked for the BIG UTILITY company as a painter back in the 80s and 90s, part of our job was to paint the big electrical towers, most of those carried 230,000 volts and we painted them while energized.
A crew of 5 of us would strap 2 gallon buckets of latex paint to our body belts, climb the 150 feet or so to the top and brush our way down to the ground, paint sloshing out of the buckets would talk to you until you got 50 feet away from the conductors. It took us 45 minutes to paint a tower from top to bottom.
at 115kv you can safely work 3 feet from the conductor, 230kv requires 6 feet and 500kv requires 12 feet from an energized source.
I have also done work from helicopters, it was a little dicey, but I am still here to talk about it, the static charge from a sling line will knock you on your can unless you allow it to touch ground first.
