HELP! Buddys 6.0 PS won,t start

My buddy has a 6.0 PS and it won't start, just cranks. I'm not by the truck he just called me for help. I don't know a thing about those motors, if any body can give me a starting spot it'd be a great help. I'm gonna check the Ford forums but I know some of you guys know these trucks too. Thanks!

Does it fart off at all, or does it just spin over? Pull the oil dipstick, is there any foam on it?

I had a case with a 7.3 psd (I know your friend has the 6.0, I dunno if they are different electrically) a while back that would just spin over, no firing or trying to fire. It ended up being some kind of injection control modual that was bad. I'm not much of a PSD expert, this is just what I have seen for one not starting.

as bad ground causes this issue and will continue to kill modules slowly

As for the 6.0 they had problems with crank position sensors. but check the basics like fuel in the tank and pump operations(fuel to engine)

If it has air and fuel I'd say not enough oil PSI from the HPOP to fire the injectors.

Thanks for the info, I'll keep that in mind if I ever have to work on one again with the same problem.

loosen fuel filter top, turn key to run, see if it is pushin fuel, if not, I think there is a fuel pump along frame, under drivers seat area, check if that is runing, might have to cycle key again to get it to go... if not running, it went, need a new one to get going....... also check to see if it has a metal tank, delamination troubles with the metal tank linings is taking out tons of fuel systems... metal tanks only.

Thanks for the replys fellas. I haven't been able to take a look at the truck yet but I told my buddy to check all the basics (he had already checked most of it as he's fairly mechanically inclined). He said it just cranks, no smoke, no sputtering, nothing; so i'm thinking something in the fuel system is messed up. He's got a guy with a code reader thats gonna see if it's throwing any codes and then I think we'll give the fuel system a good going through and see what we can find. Thanks again guys.

No sputtering or anything would make me suspect the crank sensor or camshaft sensor.

there was an abundance of wire chaffing issues on the 03 and early 04 models. One spot in particular was the harness on the drivers side top of the motor. It contained wiring that went to the ICP sensor on the back of the driver side head, it would chaff and short the icp causing a no start.

Good luck and keep us informed,

Tim

This is pretty basic, but I've gone out on a few road calls before for no-starts on powerchokes, and a couple of those times have been pulleys tied up. It sounds like it's crankin pretty decent, but the drag on that bad pulley won't let it star. One other time I've had codes for that ICM that was already mentioned.

Sounds like the cam position sensor is bad, or the chaffed wiing harness. A 6.0 needs to spin a minimum o 200 rpms to start. This builds evough pressure in the HPOP to fire the injectors. He might want to check out Superdutydiesel.com. Keith

Here's an update. We checked over all the basics, nothing wrong. The electric pump is working. Hooked up a code reader and this thing is throwing lots of codes. My buddy says "Maybe I should take it to the dealer, it is still under warranty" So it's sitting at the dealer and they can't figure it out either. He's thinking about getting a new truck, maybe a Cummins.
