Heads flying off my axe and sledgehammers!

What is the secret to keeping a replacement handle on an axe or hammer. I know about the "wedge" but seems I can never get a new handle on an old axe as good as the factory.

After I have the new handle on? Will it shrink after it dries?

I soak mine in linseed oil, it penetrates and swells the wood locking the head on.

Pound a nail in the top or probably better a screw.

I had a rake that kept coming off. I used some epoxy adhesive. A Mac truck can't pull it off now.

The head comes off because the wood shrinks as it dries out. A bucket of water always fixed them for me Seems like I had to do it twice a season and that was back when I split wood every day.

My Grandpa was a shipwright, old school, not many power tools.
He kept all his long handled tools soaking in a bucket of diesel.
