Had to watch one of our cats get put down this morning

I was just waking up getting ready to head to school this morning when I heard my mom call my name from right outside my window, she sounded pretty bad, first thing that came to mind was that my sister had got hurt while bringing the horses in (though she probably doesn't know it, I worry about her all the time). But I went to the door and saw my mom cradling one of our cats in her arm looking for her keys. I was still half asleep and started looking for the phone, by the time I realized I was looking for the wrong thing my mom had found her spare keys and taken her to the animal hospital up the road.

My mom called about 20 minutes later saying that Nola (thats the cats name) wasn't looking too good and that she would probably have to be put down and that we should come on up and say goodbye.

My sister's friend and her friends mom drove my sister there, and I came a few minutes later, and by the time we got there the vet had already given her a bunch of painkiller and said that the cats back was severed and that she wouldn't make it. She was already pretty out of it, so we said our goodbyes and watched her get put down. It was very peaceful, but at the same time so sad. The vet wrapped the cat up in a towel and we brought her back with us to bury her at our house.

I swear one of the saddest things that I've seen was our other cat (who absolutely adored Nola, she was like a mom to him) going up and sniffing the blanket, and watching him, you just knew that he knew that his best friend wouldn't be able to play with him, skidding around the hallway at night.

We have no idea by who or when she was hit. All I know is that part of our family will no longer be with us. I know a lot of you don't like cats, but Nola really was part of our family, and she will be dearly missed. First time I've cried in a long time... its just so sad to think that she won't be around to come jump up on my bed in the middle of the night see her following my mom around the house.

Just asking for you all to maybe keep her in your thoughts for a little while.

Dennis

Pets are really hard to let go. Best thing to do is get another one asap.

Hey buddy, got you covered from here. Pets are a large part of our lives, no matter the breed. Comfort comes from strange places sometimes, be open minded to life.

Sorry for your loss but, knowing cats, I'll bet old Nola is already directing your next cat to your door.

I'm sorry for your loss. I know how hard it is to put a dearly loved pet down, but I suspect that mj007's remark that she will soon be directing the next cat to your door is dead on.

Dennis:

Hey buddy, I am very sorry to hear about what happened to your cat!
We have two kitties also, but they stay inside all the time. The trouble with having animals is the terrible loss and anguish you feel when they pass away.

You have my deepest condolences on your loss, I know how attached we all get to our pets and will soon be going through the same with my 14 yr old Black Lab.

I am not getting a new puppy however as I don't care to go through this again. For some people that works very well, but I think I will let this one be my last pet and concentrate on the grand babies.

I would also like to offer my sympathy and say that the above statement is about as true as it gets.

Talking never any shame...

Thoughts form NY floating down to you, without the cold weather...

so sorry to hear of a friend leaving us that way, please remember she went quick and painfree with a lot of care and love! if it had to be, she went out in the best way.

26 years of dogs here, no more per husband. never thought I could love a cat. kitten was dumped off last december06 in minus 10 weather. sat in a tree for two days, we never knew. son rescued cat, cat caught our hearts- now I am so much in love.

let a little time pass, a smile when you think of your friend is a good sign.
and heck ya! where you live, there is bound to be your next cuddle kitty wandering in!
love the youngin' now, and give him a good old scratch for me!

Heidi in NY NOT wanting any grand babies just yet....

Dennis, sorry for your loss. About 4 months ago I woke to find our 8yo female cat had passed away behind my chair. Our 5 yo male cat was surrogated by her, he was emotionally lost for a couple months after that, you could see he was depressed, he bounced back though. They deffinitely become part of the family.

Best wish's to you and your family,

Tim

Dennis, so sorry to hear about this. I know how you feel, I really do. There isn't much that any of us can say to make you feel any better, just know that you're in good company.

I said that too after putting down my 16 y/o lab. That was 12-15 years ago now, and it wasn't until we got Jake last April that I realized that I had wasted the last 12-15 years, at least to some degree. I don't think I'll be lab-less again!
