Why would anyone shoot at a metal backstop positioned like that period? I wouldn't shoot anything over a decent handgun at a metal backstop. Dirt piles or nothing for me when shooting a rifle of any size, with a .22 as the exception.

When I was a kid Gary Dobbins shot a pellet at a bird on a twig with a large boulder behind it. The pellet came back and went thru his lower lip and lodged in his jawbone. This event taught me a lot about trajectory, ricochet, ballistics etc.
I think we were in 5th or 6th grade.

Because they have a .50 bmg they can shoot anything they want.
Some dont realize to leave the big guns to those that know how to use em
Im sure trained snipers know not to shoot straight horizontally at iron. *rolls eyes*
