Correct in fact the design was so close I believe we paid royalties on the patent in order to manufacture them

When the M-16A2 came out, it had a 3 shot burst instead of the full auto. Therefore the squad lost the automatic rifle capability. Thus the M-249 Squad Automatic Weapon. Same 5.56 round as the 16 but firing some 850 rounds per minute. OK but needs a heavier barrel. You can turn one white in a couple of hundred rounds of continous fire. Too many "leaders" try to use the 249 as a replacement for the 60.
The M-240B is great. FN designed and built it. It is a better weapon than the 60, in a lot of respects, but it does seem to have some gas system cleaning issues. I haven't been around them enough to even be able to tell a good lie about them. One thing for sure, the 240B will shoot circles around the 60. Probably a good 300 meters greater range. A 240 will do at 800M what a 60 would do at 500.

Yep, basic design from the MG42.
I carried the 60 a few times, and shot a few rounds out of them
Barrel changes are fun, had to use the asbestos glove, aka 'Chicken Mitt'.

BTW, the Marine Corp version of the A2 didn't have that stupid three round burst option, we had semi and rock and roll!

A bit more history on the 60 is that a prototype was built in the late WW2/pre Korea timeframe. It was, for all purposes a slightly modified MG42. However they had functioning problems and scrapped the idea until later.
The problem was due to the fact that the engineers did not take into account that the .30-06 (7.62 x 63mm)cartridge, which was then the military standard, had a case that was 6mm longer than the 8x57 for which the 42 was designed. When the .308 (7.62 x 51) came out in the early 50's, the old 42 was dusted off, had a barrel changed to .308 and with some minor tweeking, it worked great. Even tho the .308 was shorter in OAL, early versions used the same bullets from the .30-06 which made the OAL much closer to that of the 8 x 57.

Will one of those fit behind the grill for rush hour? You know, for the fool on the phone that waits until he or she is beside the exit they want and cuts across three lanes to make it. "Oh what a relief it is."

When I read that I was thinking, "sounds like this guy's in VA", then I saw your location and sure enough, you're in VA.

They're just shooting dirt?!

Use to be fun hitting gamma goats, starting a fire and knocking the fire out with a 105....

fun to shoot

but a pain to carry and clean. I was assigned the Company's M-60 gunner way back when. I'm so glad I never had to actually take it out on a field trip. I was only 135lbs back then, that thing would've killled me.
