Gas/diesel went nuts today!
For no reason other than pure greed, gas prices have jumped to over $4.65 and diesel to over $4.79 since 0630 this morning. According to the published reports, there is plenty of gas in the system, no shortages. The Kangaroo station in Tarrant City, metro Birmingham, is imposing a 10 gallon limit. I talked to Madhat earlier and gas was at or beyond the $4.70 mark in SC. I'm going to remember the folks who are gouging me and make it a point to avoid them like the plague in the future.

At least the stations on base waited till tomorrow morning to get me.
I wonder why the stuff in the tanks that was already there got more expensive all of a sudden...?

The answer I heard was that the prevailing high prices were due to the high prices the dealers paid for that in the tanks (when crude was more expensive).
Interesting.

Oil dropped below $100 a brl today. Are they raising prices worldwide for the hurricane or just for us? I ask because they claim they supply the world market, not us directly and apparently it's the weak dollar and world demand that causes the price to go up. At least that's how they explained it to the Senate, right? According to their earlier arguments, we should see the price per barrel go up BEFORE we see it at the pumps? I just filled up at one of the last places that had it for $3.89, it was 3.69 yesterday and everybody else is going to 4.09 tonight. Everybody is still lining up because they are scared we are gonna copy some cities to the east of us that had jumped to 4.99.

Prices are up here in town about 20 cents per gallon. I guess they are taking advantage of the people evacuating from the coast getting away from Ike. I saw oil was down 65 cents or so per barrel today. I can't figure it out, greed I guess.

depends on which station you hit here. some are up $.30, a couple are down $.05.
$3.40 to $3.89 is the price spread for unlead here. (two oddball stations running a price war at $3.22
$3.99 to $4.03 is the price spread for diesel.

The speculators strike again, "there might be some damage from the hurricane to the refineries in the Houston area that supply 20% of our fuel," statements like that drive the stations into a frenzy and they hike prices "just in case" nothing has happened yet, argghh makes me mad. This is the reason that speculation is regulated in our other commodities markets (i.e. beef, corn, and other ag products) if not, some farmer/rancher could say, well it looks like we might have a drought this year and that "could" affect our gain or crop and as such we "might" have a shortage of said product and then the price would skyrocket based solely on probability. Rant over.

I just got back from driving the late bus at church. I had to go through downtown Birmingham. At the 31st street exit there is a Shell and a Citgo, you could hit one from the other with a rock they're so close. Regular at the Shell was $4.19 and the Citgo was $4.59.

It's local gouging... Wed night, off-highway (residential) stations have only jumped $0.10... Still, that same price this evening. The same day, I filled up with ULSD for $3.99/gal at Wally-world.
Wednesday, while the bullseye for IKE was still meandering around between Corpus and Matagorda, people down here were freaking and evacuating the Coastal Bend. There were 3 stations in one local small town on Hwy-77 (Odom, Tx)that got mentioned on the local news having raised their prices $.90/gal... ($4.39/gal RUG!) Today I heard the State Atty Gen boys were going after the owners of those stations.
Apparently, the State's 1-800 number to report gouging must have been ringing off the wall about these and a few other stations. It seems to work.
Too bad they couldn't do what our city leaders did back in 1970 after Hurr Celia!
There was some hot-shot that brought an 18wheeler full of ice into town and started selling a block of ice for $20. Our current Mayor was then one of the Boys in Blue that confiscated the whole thing and GAVE the entire load away to the crowd of citizens waiting for anything frozen.
I think commandeering the gas stations and forcing the greedy owner to sell his entire inventory of fuel for $.90/gal LESS than cost would be just desserts... THEN let the State's Atty's pit bulls go after him with punitive fines on top of that!
PS. Just heard on the news... State Atty General had over TWO DOZEN complaints about stores gouging in the Gulf Coast area. Shame on them!
