They are good cars. Ride nice (for a couch on wheels.) Enough power for grandpa to get to Florida and back every year. Also not too bad on fuel. 4.6 engine is almost bulletproof if driven within reason. I think ya gotta be over 55 to drive one or a cop.. Mercury usually is the "plusher" car, while the Crown Vic is the "worker". HTH If I needed a big sedan and didn't want a 5 series BMW I'd get one.

Not trashing the Fords here, but do a search on the internet about those Crown Vics before buying one. I recall something about them having a major problem with the fuel tanks being dangerous or something like that.

Sorry I can't be more specific, just something I remember browsing over a few months back. I could be wrong.........

Check out the NEW Chrysler 300c or the Dodge Magnum. Both are rear drive I believe and sport the Hemi engine. Lots of bang for the buck.

Love those Crown Vic's, the ultimate "nark" car. I don't think that Mercury dealers are allowed to sell a Grand Marquis to anyone younger than seventy.

But seriously, I guess it would be hard to beat either of them for proven technology.

I don't even like a ford product but I rented a Grand Marquis three years ago and put 3400 miles on it in three weeks. I really hated to give it back at the end of the rental. Power galore and comfort, it was awsome. My first choice is of course the new Chrysler 300 hemi and my second choice is the Grand Marquis hands down. I've already looked at the 300 several times and it is real tempting for sure but just not too sure about that "chopped coupe" look yet.

Thanks for the replys. Were looking at a Gold Merc.with the gold alloys and leather etc.Never owned a Ford but other then the new 300 its the only game in town on rear wheel drive v8 etc.Looked at Caddy's Sedan De villes but don't care for two VEGA motors welded togather. Was also told of carbon problems/oil usage and a check/ball/valve body wear prob;em thats is very costly to correct. Not much info on the Ford yet tho so any more advise keep it coming.

When the Crowns and Mercs first came out with the redesign (92) we had some howling diffs. Crown and pinions fixed those. Not many but a few. Trannys are almost bullet proof the cop cars would get beat and almost never lose a tranny. Rear brakes wear quickly sometimes because of the rotor in hat system they have for the park brake. Some brake rotor shudder problems, some Check Engine Lite problems for carbon in the EGR tract but again nothing major. Had one with cracked heads, blew a waterline and just drove it. I think you will have a very good car if you buy one. The gold package is a bit bling bling for me but if that is what you want get it.
One important (to me anyways) item is fuel economy. The Hemi 300 may be a pig on fuel, whereas the Crowns are pretty good on fuel. I would suspect mid 20's if you didn't drive it like you stole it. With fuel prices the way they are...well....
