Doesn't the 97 have a D60 front axle? And the 77 I know has a D44 front axle 727 tranny and I think an NP205
I'd buy the newer one, 30 year old vehicles are generally "project" vehicles.
I recently heard a song about a thousand dollar car, something about might as well set your thousand dollars on fire . Funny stuff right there.

Before buying my Cummins, I had a 95 1500 4x4 shortbed reg cab with the 360. I put 103K on it. Great truck and I'd still have it if the two of us didn't become three (see my avatar) and I wanted a QC.
If you're in rust country, check under the doors for rot. A little surface rust on the outside will probably mean it's pretty ugly underneath.
If there's any pinging under load, it could be the plenum gasket.
I got 14 mpg's around town and 17 highway on trips so this 2500 should be less.
Good luck in your decision.

sold
The 1st Gen is sold and I just can't talk myself into another 2nd Gen. Either truck was going to be a "project" truck. I didn't need one I just wanted an older truck so I can learn how to work on them. I also REALLY wanted a diesel!! I just figured if I got the 1st Gen I would talk to ya'll about doing a conversion.....if I'm going to learn might just as well jump in over my head!! Thanks for all the help!! Take care!!

I don't know how much padding is on your butt or do i need to know(you CAN tell me if your proud) , but the 96 will ride way better. be very cautious of front end "death wobble' in the 96. can't beleive no one mentioned this yet. 77 has advantages at inspection time if that's a concern and has much more 'kool' appeal these days. qualifies in many states as classic or historic now cause it's 30 years old. parts are readily available for both. there is a lot to be said for late model fuel injection on a daily driver but there is virtually nothing you can do along side the road if need be on the 96. some chewing gum , bailing wire and duct tape will get the 77 home in most cases. good luck. crossy

My opinion would be go for the 96, just for the newer technology. However, if you arent wanting any creature comforts, and looking for a toy, then the 77 will work. 2nd gens are good toys and dailys.
I drive a 97 1500 with the 360, its got some good power, and I like it. I just want a cummins more. And I love Ford, but I love Dodge too, so I wouldn't be buying a Dodge just for the Cummins.
