Once we fill the "bug bag", we pull out the gun and take a couple nice size grouper, then head for the boat before the big boys come around sniffing for the blood. Keep the freezer full of lobster and grouper that way. Fun.

Salmon Fishing
How about some feedback from the guys who have done the Alaska thing. Some tell me the only way to fish for salmon in Alaska is fly fish. The Alaskans tell me they get sick of the tourists who bring their little fly rods up, tie into a big salmon, then mess up the fishing for everyone around them for 1/2 hour while they play with their fish. Seems most of them use lighter weight spinning outfits. Any feedback on this from those who have been there, done that?

Spinnin'Bob

You can do it cheap, like buying a ford or you can do it fancy, like buying a dodge. You get out of it what you put into it. You just can't expect to pick up a $1000 fly pole and cast like the pro's. Take that piece of advice from the self proclaimed wind-knot king of the Northwest. Just from the basic get-go, go to the library, check out some very basic books on fly fishing equipment. The first thing you have to decide is what type of fishing you're going to do. There's a world of difference from dippling for an eastern brookie to tackling an Alaskan salmon in the salt chuck. Check around your local area and see if there's a fly fishing group where you can drop into some of the meetings and ask your questions. Go to a local sporting goods store (like the ol' mom and pop type, not K Mart, Target or the like). They're around. Go to Google.com and type in Fly Fishing Equipment. Is there a Sporting Show going on sometime (springtime is the time for them) offering everything in the camping world and even sometimes, some casting seminars? Ton's of good sources of information. Stay away from this gang of gear-heads. You see the advice you get..... Dynamite, my aching b***t I don't want to discourage your interest but like many of our avocations, it ain't cheap. I've probably got about 1200 bucks tied up in poles. Don't even want to talk about reels. Speaking of reels, remember, in fly fishing, reels have only one purpose, to store the line. I'll be frank with you, fly fishing requires alot of time (unless you're a natural, then I want to sign up for some of your classes) to master. I picked up my first fly pole at about 12, tied my first fly a few weeks later with one of those everything included kits and now at the ancient age of 58, my roll cast is embarrassing, some of the flies look like monsters and I'm a catch and release fisherman anyway. But then, the comment about tying up the river for 20 minutes fighting a trout is very true. I admit guilt, but then I release the fish and you should see some faces then.

~Dave
