Fired that whammer jammer up.......
Finally after three solid days of work, Operations finally turned the key to the right bank air starters and all 20 of them cylinders fired up in less than four seconds. Call me crazy but there's something about a big diesel roaring to life that just sounds great. (even though it is a two stroke EMD and not a Cummins) Set there idling at 500 Rpum's for about 20 minutes and then went to 900 and loaded her up. Exhaust temps went from about 270 to 760 from idle to loaded. Cool thing about these is that they have a gear train that turns the turbo till you load it up then it comes up off the gear train and exhaust takes over. Talk about no turbo lag!! ;D
Hey Keith, got that on your truck yet?
Guess I can go home and get some much needed rest now. ;D ;D ;D ;D

What engines are they, the 645 or 710 series? Love to have been there with you. It would have brought back memories of the old Fairbanks. There's nothing that beats the sound of rolling one of those big hogs over on air.

These are the 645 series 1969 vintage.
We do some really stupid stuff to these engines like take them from a cold start to fully loaded in 12 seconds and stuff like that. Just makes my skin crawl every time they start one up. I love to hear them run though especially when you load them up and that turbo comes up off the gears. Sweeeeeeet...

We have three of them, 20 cylinder two stroke 3800 HP at 900 rpm. Nine inch bore ten inch stroke if I remember my numbers right. They are made by EMD in LaGrange Ill. One sweet machine considering the age of them. Everything that wears is replaceable without replacing the whole engine.
We have a 3612 Cat running 4800 HP too. Ten inch bore, eleven inch stroke. Talk about a sweet clean looking package now, that is it.
