Thumbs up Finally got broadband-fiber optic to the house!

This service rocks!

It's brand new-15 MBits service via fiber optic cable.

Brand new from Verizon.

It's normally $49.95 but with my Verizon existing customer discount it's just $39.95.

Bonafide 15 megabit service. I tested it.

It's called Verizon FIOS service.

Verizon has cabled our area for Fiber to the Curb.
They haven't offered the service here yet though.

I'm a 24 year Verizon employee, Wifey is a 25 year employee.
We pay the same for our DSL service as the guy across the street.

I'm hoping we'll get a break when they start offering the
Local/Long Distance/Internet/Cable TV package.

I wonder if Edge makes a Drag Comp Fiber Optic modem.

Hey Shovelhead, they also offer 5mbps service for $39.95/month before any bundled discounts, but I'm sure you already know that. If I had chosen the 5mbps, after the discounts I'd only be paying $29.95.

I used to do contract software development for Lucent and Verizon was a pretty big customer of theirs. I also did contract work for a company call Xylogics in Burlington, Ma. Their product was a terminal server called an "Annex Box". I don't know if you're aware of them but these guys today knew of them. Xylogics has since been bought out by a bigger company.

I must say the Verizon crew that did the install was great. Very professional and I had no problem with them stringing that cat 5 cable throughout the house. My house was the first Fiber install for most of them.

Tomorrow I'm going to call Verizon and give those guys a pat on the back.

Good job.

Are there any rollout or service maps??? I NEED FIBER!!!

Time Warner Telecom keeps on calling me at work insisting that they have fiber to our office building. They start at 2/2mbps packages and go up from there. I'm a little leary of them since they tend to have longer service outages at night and that's not good for our overseas workforce. Anyone have experience with TWTC Fiber?

Whats your upload rate with 15mb down?

brandon.

I 'WISH' we had fibre in our area. Comcast is ok but ......

I did have 3MB/sec down and 256 till I got a note from Comcast saying that they were upgrading their entire system and that everyone should be at 4MB/sec down and 383 up by Mar 31... but when I talked to them on the phone, they told me that I could do better for a $10 speed upgrade, this will give me 6 megs down and 728 up while everyone else (who doesn't have the speed upgrade) 4 megs down.

15 megs...... geez.. I WISH!!

It's 15mbps download and 2mbps upload.

Here's the plan:

http://www22.verizon.com/fiosforhome...ot/package.asp

This thing is smoken!

It's faster than the *internal* ethernet LAN at work, which is a constant 11mbps.

I've used Time Warner Road Runner service for about 4 years now. Best money I have ever spent. It's $50/month but it literally NEVER goes down. I can count on one hand the number of times in those 4 years.

If you can't get fiber optic where you live, I highly recommend looking into Road Runner.

Also, keep in mind that MBPS usually means Mega-BITS-per-Second. Which is different from Mega-BYTES-per-Second. With RR I download at around 1.9 megaBYTEs/sec. There are 8 bits in a byte.

Commercial with James Earl Jones for Verizon Online DSL (1.5 Mbps twisted pair) for 29.95 a month (requires one year contract) running now on the news channels. Says first month and modem w/wireless router is free when you order online. The fine print on their web page however says there's an additional $19.95 shipping and activation charge and the offer expires 3/19/05.
That's cheaper than what my provider charges at $39.95/month and I had to buy my modem.

You're making me jealous... only thing affordable (75€/month) is 768/128 kBit/s and is limited to 4 gigs/month.

I think I'll need to move....
