I used to run rotella and hated that smell after evey oil change. It smells like you are riding around in an old AMC gremlin with no valve cover gaskets

I use the delo 400, it has a 50 degree higher flash point, not much as temps go I know, but if you are shutting down that turbo a little on the hot side, it just might be enough to keep it from coking the bearings.

Truthfully I think any good brand of oil is ok if you keep it clean, synthetics obviously are superior, and if you are real smart you will even add more filter space.

For an old guy like me, I like changing the oil on a regular basis, worked good for my father and thats how I was brought up. So I feel comfortable doing it that way.

I do know guys who run the extended oils and are VERY happy with it. Pretty much a personal thing I guess, pick what makes you feel comfortable, most all the options are much better than they were 20 years ago.

 

A few years ago Rotella didn't have that lovely smell after an oil change. They started adding some kind of chemical to keep up with stiffer EPA restrictions and that's when Rotella developed the smell after an oil change. :

Myself I'm kind of a sick and strange individual and like the smell. Reminds me of a job well done.

I don't know what smell yall are talking about with the Rotella. I didn't smell a thing.

Hoss, have fun with that oil change. 11 quarts takes a long time to drain.

I've got a 15 quart pan. I figure I'll just pull the plug and go on about my business while it drains. That will give me time to check off the rest of the stuff on the 7,500 mile maintenance list...or fight with the filter. :

 

I'm from the old school so I always let mine run a little while before I drain it too. This makes sure everything is in suspension that the filter don't catch and drains out. We do that on a lot of machinery here at work too, especially on the big 6000 and 7000 horsepower motors we have here.

 

I did that....sort of. I actually used the truck to run a few errands right before I changed the oil. Talk about HOT oil.....but I didn't have the patience to let it cool down much. :

Didn't get burned....it was just hot. I knew it would be, but I didn't want to wait any longer to change it. Still got some on my fingers though.....pretty warm.

I didn't find any Rotella at Cotsco today, but did find 4 gallons of Mobil Delvac 1300. I'll give that a go and let you know if it has that wonderful aroma of Rotella.

;DOkay, Knock on wood. Okay, not knock. tap...no, no, okay, so far, the Amsoil has been great!
I do not know what the previous owner used. But, it was fresh when I bought the truck last year. I did the flush thing and put in the 15w40HD. I did change it once, again, for piece of mind before driving to Florida. Seemed fine when I pulled it. Been changing the filters regular.
The engine definitly got quieter. Even had others say so. Well, that of course is all relative. Still have to shut it off at fast food drive throughs. DOH!
I even could tell some difference putting the dip stick back in. Stuff is really slick!
I am sold. I use the old oil in my lawn mower. Why not? The motor is on its second deck and has been around since the early seventies. Waste not, want not.
I am seriously considering putting Amsoil in one of my Jeeps. The one that is not wheeled as much as the other. Can't see doing it if I am going mess it up with mud, dust and water, as it does seem to get past some stuff.
But, then again, I might do both.
Good Survey. Price does seem to drive useage, though.
