f650 ford?
My neighbor just gave me a 81 ford, I think its a f650. It has a gvw of 27500. Gas engine, cab only , with no bed. He was going to use it to haul a back hoe. I plan on using it as a roll back / car hauler. It has 22 ft of frame behind the cab. It will make 24 ft pretty easy, I can probably get two small cars on it. It runs and drives, has a battery drain issue. Its a 5 speed with a 2 speed rear and what looks like a 351, but he said 374 or something?
All it really needs is the bed finished, that will probably take a week or less. Its clean otherwise, with decent tires etc. Any input on it? I dont know much about it, but I ll be doing the fab on the bed, thats no problem, Im thinking a wood deck, finished nice and a paint job and its done. Its all white now.

All I know is with gas prices the way they are that thing sure is going to be expensive to drive...
Lets see some pics of it... before and after you work on it maybe?
Sounds like the price was right.
For what its worth, the new F-650s come equipped with the 5.9ltr Cummins

should be a 377 ford. Gas hogs for sure, also had an issue with the bonding ring in the balancer coming "unglued" and the outer ring slipping. That leaves you with no reliable way to set the timing with a light. You end up havng to replace the balancer with a new one, to get the timing marks lined up again.
I have used vacuum timing on these engines, more than I care to recall. Also, they don't seem to last long when worked hard.
The two speed rear is almost bulletproof. The same cannot be said for the electric actuator on the rear housing. It seems to grenade at every possible occasion.
Good luck with it

All I d use it for , would be the occasional trip to the drag strip (about 26 miles) and mostly as a recovery truck, for when another one of my cars break or when a friend needs a car moved. I have a 50 ft enclosed race trailer that I pull with my 3500 but I ussually kepp two cars in it and a quad, and everytime I need to go get a car I have to pull the trailer out and unload atleast one car. Plus sometimes they will be in small parking lots, apartment complexs etc so the 50 ft er doent fit well.
I was thinking put some stack bed receivers on the side and make it so I could haul dirt, rock etc....too, instead of my 3500. It would be lucky to get used 12-20 times a year, and I could get gas money on half probably. On the rare occasion I need to move more then two cars it would come in handy then too.
