Looks like I am too late, but here on the farm, we do it the same way Fronty Owner has stated. It seems to be the ONLY way to be sure not to get sprayed.

I forgot to add that unless the skunk has enough room in the cage to fully raise it's tail, it connot spray. (Little known fact).

S-l-o-w-l-y cover him up with a blanket.
C-a-r-e-f-u-l-l-y carry him to the neighbor's (the one with the dogs) door step.
G-e-n-t-l-y set him down.
Then ring the doorbell and haul kester...... after setting up the tripod with the video camera running of course.
That ought to be a $10,000 winner on America's Funniest Home Video.

Here's a tried and true method my piney grandfather used to use when he'd end up with a skunk in one of his live traps.

Materials:

- Dropcloth/tarp
- 10' or so of raingutter drain pipe
- Pickup truck

Procedure:

- Throw tarp over trap, back truck up to within 10' of trap.
- Place drain pipe over end of tailpipe with the other end feeding into trap underneath of tarp. Start pickup and hold rpm around 1500-2000 for about 5 minutes.
- Wal'la, Mr. Skunk passes on peacefully in his sleep-no tomato juice bath required.

My grandfather always had gassers-I bet diesel exhaust works even better...

Not a suggestion

A friend of mine parents had a problem with the neighbors dogs tearing through his trash. He went to confront the owners and they didn't respond well, so he threw out some exlax with his trash. A couple weeks later another neighbor friend told him that, he went to the dog's owners house and it smelled like poop.

Not a suggestion, just a story I was told.

Good luck with the skunk.

Just leave the skunk there for the next time the dogs come to visit. That way they got a new playtoy. Might solve your dog problem right there. Personally when you hear all the comotion then go out and shoot the dogs and the skunk and problems are all gone. I'm all for Varmints in the woods but when they start coming around the house and barn they gotta go, to much risk. There's a reason why in most states skunk's and coons are illegal to keep as pets, although many people do, they are carriers of some nasty little things in there system. As far as I know anybody with dogs in the country knows that it is an un-written law that dogs are welcome until they become a hazard. If they are caught chasing livestock or causing problems around neighboring homes they are fair game. I have shot more than one neighbors pet, the first time I will talk to the owner if the situation permit's. So far when I let them know why, it hasn't been an issue, but it was only done with good cause. For safety sake I think you need to let other neighbors know what happened along with the dog owner, because no that is not what dogs just do and it is not normal. Typically when strange dogs meet they might test each other, but it doesn't just mean the fight is on.

I said to heck with it and walked up to the door and opened it and they ran out each time. One even stoped, turned and looked at me as if to say "Thanks butt hole".
Just to pass along some good info, the above does work very well I simply used an old slicker and placed it over the trap and slowly raised the door. The skunk walked out and was last seen heading for parts unknown.

As for the dogs it seems that one of them had a run-in with piece of lead today. Neighbor has loud pipes so I can hear him when he leaves. Moved the trap closer to target maybe another one will be ready to go part of the way to work with me in the morning.

Bigfoot, I respect your attempt to humanly capture the alleged perpetrators of the homicidal act that claimed the life of your beloved family pet and deliver them to the appropriate authorities for incarceration/disposition. I have a similar situation with the neighbors cat scratching my fenders while jumping up on the truck at night. Problem is, I like my neighbors. Political correctness out of the way, do what you have to to keep your family safe!

The only way that I have seen this done is to throw a tarp over the live trap and carefully release the varmit through the only open hole.

As far as the pits get a high powered pellet/ bb gun with a heart lung shot seems to work best virtually un-noticeable noise and entry point!

Of course being from ULTRA LIBERAL California I would know nothing about it!

The question now is, has the dog owner even noticed his dogs gone yet, or is he one of these that just has them cause it makes him a man to say he has em. I think if I had two animals missing I would have knocked on every door within miles the next day. Woops, i take that back, I did nock on them doors. Calves have bad habits. I have had to take a trailer over 10 miles cross country to pick up one pair that were on the run for a few days.

i have two pits there the best dogs! but i am really really careful to not make the mean....(chaining a tire to them in my front yard ect.) we have all seen it! they kinda run off now and then all the neigbors seem to enjoy them....if they EVER do ANY KIND of fighting killing ect its bye bye doggie time! they are what you raise them to be i had a lab that would kill anything! good dog but her first owner was pretty mean to her and i had to eventually have her put down but she was seriously trying to bite peopel !

you do what you have to do...if a dog kills once it will do it again i promise esp. two or more together
