Im in St.Cloud, well actually Avon. About 8 miles out of the town there. Not to far in the sticks but not to close to the city life, just what I like.

This is probably a X3 or X4, but I have a '92 Honda Accord with a 2.2L 4 banger that I drive 42 miles each way to work and back every day. The car has 282,000 miles on, but it still gets 30-33 mpg (a K&N cold air intake kit made a HUGE difference in the mileage!), is very reliable, has comfotable seats, and is cheap to operate/insure. I'm sure most mid 90's 4 cylinder manual sedans would be capable of around 30 mpg's or so. The bad part, though, is that I know a lot of people are buying them up for the exact same reason, so they're getting harder to find.

I have an 88 toyota pickup, 4 spd, vinyl everything, no bells and whistles. I drive it HARD up and down mountain roads daily, and I get 28 mpg in it.. and I am NOT nice to it. I don't shift till 4k rpms, and I like to speed shift. Easy to work on, and fun to drive. I paid $1000 for my 88, but I bought it from a friend. I bought it with 197k miles on it, and its now got about 225k miles on it with no issues.

They've had Smart Cars in Canada for a while . I've seen them running down the interstate at over 70 m.p.h . They are probably the safest small car on the market http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CJHpUO-S0i8

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned the VW Golf, Jetta, or Rabbit. I had a mid-80's Golf diesel that consistently got low 40's and a '90 gas Golf that got low 30's. Both were great beater cars although I'm partial to the diesel and now that fuel prices are so high, the price may have been driven up beyond your budget range.

Good cars, but parts aren't very common and they seem be like CTD in the fact that no one ever wants to let go of the good ones or for a reasonably cheap price.

I just bought an 01 f150 that runs on cng @ .63 a gallon here in UT for my new work truck. It gets the same milage as my Dodge in town but much cheaper and much easier to drive in town.

Also on the Jettas and similar, they are really too SMALL for some of us...... I sat in one a couple of days ago, and if I had to drive that thing more than 10 miles, I would walk!

For anyone with a larger than size 8 shoe, they have nowhere near enough footroom.
