I wish I was as fine, as those who work the pipeline!
On the bright side sounds as though you have pretty good job security.

Its a cluster.... bad.
We ended up with 9 welders out of the 10 we needed. Only took 49 tested so far to get em. There is two sets of clients overseeing the project, our side (for the coal company) and KinderMorgans side (the eventual owners of the line). The KM inspectors are going outrageously above and beyond what is the accepted code just to be a bunch of you know whats.... And they are claiming they can cause they will be the final owners. They ran off four of the welders in the last week for minor repairs. We had to have a come to Jesus meeting with the power that be and explained how everything we are doing is acceptable to API codes and is DOT approved, and that if they dont back off this line will never get finished and its gonna cost someone well into the 10's of millions above the contract cost to get it finished.
So, all in all, they let the welders come back (which they shouldnt have been dismissed in the first place) and I still have to test a few more to make the required 12. Tested 4 this morning, three didnt make it past noon. Its bad... real bad.

I absolutely hate testing welders. Its not a good day when you have to tell a man who is trying to feed his family and pay his bills that he has to carry himself down the road and find another job.

Ohhhhhhh, man that is BAD duty. I was referring to the length of time the project is gonna take. Not having to tell guys they didn't make the cut. Thats no fun.

Its easy, take one welding machine, one welding hood, a bunch of rods, couple pieces of pipe and a bunch of time. Make the two pieces of pipe turn into one piece of pipe. Leave out all of the stuff thats not supposed to be in the weld.

Whats even worse, like to day, had a good welder that welded up both his 30" and 36" tests. It looked good, but when we went to the mechanicals he lost the straps. He welded two days on it and didnt get a penny for it. This company isnt paying unless you pass the test. I really felt for the guy but I have to do my job too.

That's tough but there's allot of folks needing to work so I can't blame them. Alright, I'm out. If the rain holds off for a few hours in the morning I'll finish before lunch. See you all later.

Sniff. I cant weld worth beans. Had our second police officer this year shot in Anchorage. Luckily she is going to make it. All the gang bangers coming up here is really irritating me. Slow around here tonight. Have to check in later since sunset isnt until 2340.

Me neither Buddy, Me neither. Oh well, I can work wood with the best of them.
I'm out too,
Fresh coffee on for the night shift, Wifey made some CC cookies, and a big ol apple pie.
Enjoy!
Oh ya, cold beer in the fridge for Hat, or who ever gets there first, just don't trample the dragon... Matts got him looking pretty good!
