Man, Claude... when I was in high school, I had a cobra 29LTD turned up by a CB shop in my town... roger beep, good, bad, and the ugly whistle, and a nice talk back. I could smoke a wal-mart cb from about 100 yards....

How about a channel grant beep and alert tones... instead of looking at 24 channels, I have about 3 "pages" of talk groups I have to be able to monitor. 5 I'm active on. Since we cover 2 districts now, 5 more that I have to be aware of that my partner monitors in case either of us need help with something. It has it's limits, but one thing Engler did right was get this radio system for us. We were a guinnea pig for the rest of the country.

Not all the counties in our area are on board but most are. If there's an emergency, from here, I can patch any of their dedicated talk group (channel) to one of ours, or another of theirs, whether it be a pursuit, disaster response, etc. I can patch a talk group into a dedicated phone line in the system so an officer on the road can use his radio to talk to somebody on telephone. Done this for interpreter assistance and other emergencies. I can private call any single radio and no other can monitor, it's recorded digitally (as the entire system is), but not broadcast out. There is also an internal intercom so I can speak to the other regional dispatch's (headquarters) privately, without tying up the radio for the officers. Each individual radio has a digital ID that we have to log in as there's an emergency alert on each radio. If somebody sets an alert off, the system gets dedicated to that radio til we track the officer down. Just some trivia for ya that I can think of right now.

No GPS on the system(union thing), just have to send the cavalry to their last known location if they don't answer up. I do use a track ball for the monitor though, rather than a mouse. The talk groups are "boxes" displayed on a flat screen. The phone lines are similar on another monitor. I'll see if I can get a pic for ya here.
