Driving on ice:CTD or Beetle
#16
I got out of my IH Scout one day, unbeknownst to me, on black ice. My first clue was when my feet buzzed out from under my formerly upright frame and my posterior contacted the cold hard ground jamming my vertebreas together shorting me by about three inches. My second clue was as I sat there massaging my, well you know, I helplesly watched as my IH Scout slid slowly back down the hill and bashed ever so lightly into the guardrail. That was my first and hopefully last experience with black ice.

Other than the upper half of the tailgate rusting out, I never had a problem with mine. Had the 304 V8 with the 727 trans and oversize tires and never had a problem. Even had a six foot snow plow on the front and worked like a charm. It got me places I wouldn't think of taking my newer stuff.

I guess I'll show my age. I worked for an IH dealer in high school and drove the first ever Scout in the North Central Texas area from the rail yard in Dallas to Sherman. Blue and white pickup cab with the three speed and "1/2" of a V8. Talk about plain...it didn't even have a radio. IH had about six trucks, including the Scout that was going from dealer to dealer for showing the new models. They also carried Pontiac, so I got to drive some the first LaMans, Ventura's, Bonnevilles, etc that came out. The Ventura 2 door HT with a 4 sp and a 389 Tri Power was one fine automobile back in those days. Too bad at fifty cents and hour I couldn't afford one.

The older Scouts were all wheel drive. My dad had one of them with the 152 in it. Was race car but would climb up the side of the barn. That 152 was neat, looked just like you cut a 304 in half with a big saw.
