One of the reviews I read (probably at dpreview) said not to get the "kit" which is the Canon Rebel XT and standard Canon lens, but to just buy the body. They then recommended a lens to get, don't remember what brand.
As a novice/non-pro/point&shoot guy, I probably couldn't tell the difference.

Story about Canon Customer service

I had a Canon A70 that was having problems with the CCD. After doing some research I read that Canon was repairing the CCD wiring for free. So I sent it in and instead of fixing it, Canon sent me the newer A520 with a 128mb sd card (16mb is standard) within 10 days. Free exchange, no hassles. Needless to say, I was very satisfied with the repairs.
