Dell: Windows 7 slow - use Intel website drivers
burned up few Dell's lately (nVidia cards made cheap by nVidia)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dell_Latitude
NVidia GPU problemsBasically all D620, D820, D630,and D830 models with NVidia mobile GPUs will experience GPU overheating problems. A Class Action Lawsuit settlement by NVidia was reached where certain Dell models were provided with replacement motherboards at no expense.
anyways, had to buy a new computer, made SURE it had a Intel video card.
after doing the Windows Service Pack 1, it has MAJOR latency problems (you could count to twelve after clicking a button)
it comes loaded with like version 6 of the driver.
Dells website for drivers has version 8.
after restoring it 3 times, and spending ~5 hours on phone with the guys from India (some good guys over there)
one of them told me ..we know about this, but don't know of A FIX.
so today i loaded the latest version of the driver from Intel's website, it was like version 15,
and it works great!!!
the wife bought a stupid little mini netbook last nite....SAME THING.....Win 7 was slower than pooh....
did a uninstall of the old driver,
reboot, load new driver from Intel....awesome!!!
hope that saves someone 5 hours of phone time!!

if you GOOGLE it, you can put one 2gb stick of DDR3 RAM in the netbooks (both HP and ACER), seems to make them run awesome.
there are youtube videos on how to, you have to take the keyboard off the acer, and push thru it to push the back off, then the RAM is right there.
DDR2 ram won't fit

Make sure your system can use it before you buy the RAM. Some of the netbooks (EEE-pc, etc.) can't address more than 1GB of RAM.

I had a slowness issue with my new Dell until I found this about a month ago and it has made a world of difference in the speed. I now have no issues whatsoever.

to be honest, we need a "how to fix Windows 7" thread.
Like how to cut & paste stuff into WORD without it closing every time:
How to close document without closing Word 2007
How to Minimize Windows 7 Media Player
this is the BEST thing EVER:
Add "Take Ownership" to Explorer Right-Click Menu in Win 7 or Vista
it allows you to load stuff off your USB, and then be able to control it on your own computer.
How do I enable recent items - Microsoft Answers
Show Folder Tree in Windows 7 Explorer
that's the basics I have found to get a Win7 install back to being at least decent.
I have not found a decent way to get NETWORK CONNECTIONS to show up in some semblance of intelligence. it's just ignorant that you can't enable & disable connections directly to troubleshoot other connections.
but hey, it's progress.....right..??

another GREAT fix for Windows 7 searching for files by file name.
found this by searching Windows website, someone on there recommended it.
it ROCKS!!
we are constantly referring to old documents or contracts at work, and you could find them in XP, but never in Win 7

Had some Mac's. I still have a Mac. But I still use my PC for the serious stuff (like gaming). Oh, now that more than one person has spent the extra money on a Mac, the virus writers have finally started getting a little more serious. Even zdnet (apple lovers) have started posting beware's http://www.zdnet.com/blog/bott/new-a...rs-update/3396.
There is a reason why antivirus companys like Norton and McAfee sell antivirus programs to apple users.
'
Anyway, now back to what a normal computer user was discussing: 04ctd, good info!!
'
We still use our book when we are traveling but for home use, I still prefer my PC (Since I have had Apples since the early 80's I feel like I can dig back).

wyo, here's some thing else that drives me NUTS...
if you drag something near the edge of the screen, it makes it take up half the screen, or goes full screen. it drives me crazy when doing homework, and trying to surf DTR or youtube on the other half of the screen
Disable Aero Snap (the Mouse Drag Window Arranging Feature in Windows 7)
