Odie, my buddy had one of the 78's or 79's with the mitsubishi 6 cylinder in it and I wish I knew what happened to it. I do remember that it got really good mileage and was a slug to drive.

All I remember , is that it was really hard to push the gas pedal down. My father said I could get another vehicle as soon as the slant six died!!!!!Needless to say I had the thing pretty much right through college. That motor never died!!! We eventually sold it to fisherman who drove it till the body simply fell off!!!

My concern with Ford is that they just can't leave well enough alone. Perfect example, the 6.0L. Now if Ford can buy a engine and not touch it they might be on to something.
Yesterday I rode in my sisters '01 Ford PS Excursion and let me say my Dodge is lightyears ahead in build, noise and ride quality.
Even my wife mentioned it to me.

I chose the Dodge/Cummins. I really like the look of the Dodge (have since '94) and the interior. As far as build quality, I think they are all pretty equal. Dodge just seems to have a reputation (either deserved or not, I don't know) that they have to get away from. I do wish they offered more configurations, such as cab & chassis and regular, extended, and crew cab. It's unbelieveable how many people say they would've bought a Dodge had there been a full crew cab. For me, the Quad Cab will be just fine, though. They also need to do something else for an auto tranny. While I'm sure the 48RE will be fine, the lower first gear of the Allison and TorqueShift does make a difference. Finally, Dodge needs to stop with their cost cutting, therefore having things as options that should be standard on all models. I understand that it's business but when the Ram is your number one sold vehicle, you need to apply more resources and funding to ensure it maintains that status, not take away from it from something else. Case in point, DCX airing a Dodge Magnum commercial during the most televised program of the year instead of the Cummins 600.

Mine was the first Dodge I've ever owned, only bought it because of the cummins engine, but I can HONESTLY say, it's been a good truck. After I got the shimmy/shaking figured out, it rides like a Cadilac and pulls like a mule. Haven't driven or even looked at a 2004 DC because I know I'd have to buy one, and anyway, momma says she's gonna hold me to what I said, "I'll drive it until the motor quits, then buy a new one" Open mouth A, insert foot B

I had a 85 ford with 6.9 $$$ me to death. Traded off for a 96 F-150 4x4 351ci. Kept it untill it was payed off then traded off for my 2001 ctd QC 4x4 Like the interior & exterior of dodge much better. At 52 I'll probably buy one more truck & it will be a CTD.

ford cummins and dodge cummins. i like different features of both, manual hubs and a large crew cab in the ford, the suspension, drivetrain, axles...until 2003 and bodylines of the dodge. honestly i think that the pickup manufacturers need to move in the direction of kenworth and peterbuilt offering a variety of engine and tranny choices in a variety of platforms. they are all close now to having so many design differences that appeal differently to different purchasers that the need for different diesel engines and trannys in my opinion is definately becoming a necessity.
ford should offer the cummins, but they probably are too bull headed to look at it this way.
Frieghtliner is loosing alot of business because the no longer offer cummins and or cat in the smaller executive class trucks. excluding the chevy senario with the isuzu i think that a large portion the diesel purchasing crowd purchases based on a familiar motor family one that has a long standing reputation and is a household name. CAT Cummins Perkins International are all established names in this country and they have a substantial following in the light and heavy duty market i question which filters into the small truck market. i have missed others but to point out that These have reputations based on thier performances for the last 20 30 years, even when they need parts they are typically easy to come by. before i left montana i know of one customer who's driver with a 2004 frieght and shake spent 8 days in gillette Wyoming waiting for a part having something to do with his injection system.
