Class 8 Truck clubs?????
Anyone know of any class 8 truck clubs. I am looking into buying an old Peterbilt for my son and I to restore. It wont be used for long haul execpt to pull our 5th wheel.
I have looked at 1966 and 1968 2 axle but I need the wheel base long enough for a small sleeper. The sleeper would be converted into seating for the kids and eventually grand kids..
Any ideas
Thanks
Rick

Dieseldude4X4 looked into buying a "mini-rig" just for personal/collector's use and discovered that the license, tags & insurance would be the same as if he was driving it full time for a living.
Might be something to investigate first..........

I made a call to the California DMV and found out the information that I needed.
It could cost me as much as $900 a year! But you know...I still may do it just to be different..
We pay nearly $400 on my wifes truck now...

Put a camper unit on it and lic. it as an RV. Had a friend who converted an International Eagle and only had to pay for RV tags. Of course DOT had to inspect the thing to make sure it was an RV before they would let him reg. it as such.

Try this site for a club in your area;
http://www.aths.org/
There are conversions sometimes shown in the classifieds.
They'll also have info on how to stretch your frame...

Would cutting the hitch off and anything that has to do with a trailer be enough to not classify the truck for commercial use and only driving? And then what would you classify it as if it was a single cab? I want a single cab one day. Maybe put a flat bed or some type of bed to carry stuff on it?

Good to see other interested in old rigs.
I have been involved with multiple restores in the past.
Im not familiar with Californias policies, but I found that any vehicle that is 30 years or older can be registered as a "Classic Vehicle". If you can provide documentation that your vehicle is a restored classic and will be used for "Event Only", the registration is not as expensive.
However, with the cheaper title that reads "Classic Vehicle: Event Only", I found the insurance goes up.
So you either pay more for licensing or more for insurance!
As far as clubs, American Truck Historical Society is one of the best (ATHS).
Check out their web page and look for a local chapter nearest you. Join today.
I wish you the best of luck. Completing a full restoration on one of these trucks can sure be a satisfying event!
