I didn't see that he said it was running HOT. did I miss that?
Fuel burning in the exhaust manifolds will make them red hot.

I rmemeber at some point he said it wasn't running hot overall, just the exhaust is glowing at idle.

if it has movable in-line heat risers in the exhaust they could be partially closed and cause glowing manifolds
