ya you can get an in line for a radiator hose or go thru a freeze plug and it will be fine. that is all we had in Idaho on our old backhoe. fired up every time (well with the exception of that -40 week straight, nothing wanted to start)

A couple of years ago I did a quick valve job on a Case 188 diesel in a 580B for a buddy of mine, same engine thats in the 480. I would not even dream of putting glow plugs into an engine that was not designed to have them. You have no idea were the water passages are or what glow plug to use and how close to put it to the injector. A disaster in the making to attempt something like that.
Try this site, this is Case's parts catalogs, search for 480 and it should come up.

From looking at the parts break down, there looks like there is a screw in plug on the intake centered. Almost ideal for the 12v fuel type cold start aides.
Or you can get one of the plain 12v coil type heaters used in the other Case 480 models.
As far as block heaters go, we have a 1000W can plumbed into our JD410 backhoe. Works great, only needs to be plugged in for 2 hours to heat it up enough to start. The important thing is the plumbing, you have to make sure it will thermosyphin coolant into the block.

No that does not sound reasonable at all. I would have told the seller he did not know what he was talking about right then and there. And probably not have bought the machine from him, but thats just me.

I haven't bought the tractor yet. He's asking $5k plus my trailer, which I valued at $700.00. But the motor was rebuilt and has 40 hours on it since then. It's either that or a Yanmar with 26hp and FEL (the Yanmar looks new).

I thought about that, but I don't want to have to "plug" the motor in for several hours before I use it. At least when I don't plug in my truck, my only issue is no heater for the 1st 15 miles or so haha.
Will a block heater/coolant heater get the motor warm enough to actually start in cold weather (Edgewood)?

We have a few of those, Cat's and Deere's. Don't forget about the ones that started on gas and then switched over to diesel.
