Buying truck in another state
A friend of mine has a son who lives in California, and he wants to buy him a truck while he is down here visiting in Texas. How does that work as far as the registration, taxes, smog control, etc.? Can he purchase the truck here in Texas and get it registered in California while he has the truck in Texas?
Are there any additional fees for bringing an out of state vehicle into California?

Re:Buying truck in another state
Calif does not allow new vehicles to be brought in from other states unless the vehicle was manufactured for sale in California. Most Oregon dealers sell vehicles manufactured for sale in California because we are neighbors and they get lots of customers from California.
Otherwise, you can only bring a used not manufactured for sale in Calif vehicle into California as long as it has at least 7,500 miles.
Go hereCalif DMV
What should a California resident look for when buying a new vehicle from another state?
California residents are prohibited from importing, purchasing, or leasing a new vehicle from another state, unless the vehicle was manufactured for sale in California and the Environmental Protection Agency label certifies the vehicle has California smog equipment. California considers a new vehicle to be any vehicle with less than 7,500 miles on the odometer at the time it is purchased or aquired.
