Once upon a time, in a galaxy far far away.

I actually took the time to fashion something out of wood. This might not seem like a big deal to the average guy, but, I am a mechanic, and I weld. I DO NOT!!!! work with wood.

Built a bed frame and headboard combo, out of 2x12x8' KD spruce lumber. rounded all the corners over with a router, just to make life easier, and finished it with "cherry" varathane type varnish. this being said, it turned the almost white spruce boards, a nice light red colour, which ended up matching the rest of the furniture in the room. The rest was made of red cedar.

I was pleasantly surprised the way the frame/headboard turned out, apparently it was good enough that she took it in the divorce. But that is ok, I have more ideas up my sleeve.

It seems that any factory built wooden bedroom sets, are pretty much junk anymore. that being said, I have also used red cedar logs, and yellow cedar logs, and cut them lengthwise with a chainsaw, did all the notching and saddles required to make the "legs" out of half log, then sanded the flat surfaces... viola, instant bedframe. Rather heavy duty, but what the heck, it worked great.

Those are my useless ideas, and I am happy to have them.

Good luck

Here's an idea for you. You should browse thier whole websight and see all the tools for lots of ideas. If you've ever wondered how something was done, they'll have the tool for it.

i have built a few beds in my day, and im working on a king size headboard/footboard setup right now. If you have to ask for plans on how to build one, you just need to go buy one that is already made. Sorry to be so blunt, but thats just the rule...

Actually I am not looking for plans perse' just good ideas and maybe some measurement guidelines to go by. I've looked at a few different designs by furniture shops online and am incorporating a few ideas into my design. I think it's going to be sweet.

I decided to buid it all out of 2"x10" rough lumber, I'm later going to "antique" my creation with a hammer and pece of chain and hopefully get a nice dark stain on.
I've allready made the corner posts, ripped 2X10 lumber, clamped and glued, tonight I'm going to work on the headboard and footboard, mortise and tennon planked and glued panels into the corner posts, same for the side rails.

The headboard is going to be 5' tall with perhaps a scrolled portion on the top and a main panel 5'x 27" covered in a hair-on calf hide and attached with heavy brass upholstery tacks or perhaps silver conchos? Of course a Horse Shoe in the top portion of the scrolled panel for good luck and I was also considering a strand of Barbed wire on the very top??? or perhaps I'll affix some rope for decoration is I have a collection of busted and strteched heel rope and a head rope or two. I'm going to router a few simple designs into various areas. Chamfer the corners on the posts at 45 degrees and perhaps some diamond pattern engravements down the side rails (which will be 2'X10")

I think it it is going to be awesome. I haven't really drawn a plan but have a picture in my mind that I am working off, I have drawn a few simple sketches of my ideas which seem to evolve as I go.

I will definitely post pictures when the creation is done.

When i was in college i used 2x6's and a sheet of plywood for my air matress.. I carpeted the plywood though so it wouldnt sliver and poke a hole in my bed.

Dont think your wife would approve though

LOl that is pretty funny.

I'm talking about something a little bit more sophisticated than that. I'm slightly if barely past the air mattress stage. I did buy some more goodies for it tonight though.

I have the basic plan in my mind I think it's going to look good.

Got the hair on hide, and a few other accessories. Good thing she's away at her mothers.
