Building my own bed....

Okay, so this is just like it sounds. I'd really like to build a bed for our master bedroom, nothing too extravagant or extra fancy, just a headboard and foot baord rails etc..

Does anyone have any plans or building ideas for this project?? any help would be greatly appreciated.

I think a nice aluminum one for a 6 1/2 foot pickup would work great. Headache rack for the headboard, dump gate for the footboard, and if its a water bed mattress, than sidesboard would fit in real nice.

Oh the peanut gallery is colourful today.

I was thinking of more than likely using WOOD

I think the alluminum idea would be sweet, but I don' think SHE would.....

I think I'll try to keep HER happy with this one..

I'm looking for a fairly simple design that I could complete over a weekend or something... Ideas greatly appreciated.

Not sure where you live, but you could go to like a post and pole plant. do something simple with 4 main posts, 1 main beam for the length, 2 main beams for the head rest and end, then find some smaller spindles to put in between the headrest and end to give it a little character. use I think like a 6-7" lag screw to connect all beams and post, once doweled out you could use a little wood glue to put the slats/spindles in place. Then maybe laquer it for nice look. just an easy DIY bed, dunno. made one similar to this a LONG time ago.

Go to a store and buy a frame. Theres lot of selection and reason prices. If you live in Canada go to IKEA

Unless you want to be original..

I agree....Ive been to IKEA and 95% of it is junk (no offence if u like IKEA)...

Ive been thinking of building a heavy duty bedframe myself just havent gotten around to it. It will likely be pretty crude as Im not a carpenter and have very little in the way of woodworking tools.

Probably the main reason I have yet to do this, is matching with the rest of the bedroom furniture will be a problem...

Buy the frame then bolt the headboard & foot board to it.

That is not a bad idea right there, but I'd think that making the head board would be the most time consuming, some side rails should be pretty easy..

I guess my biggest problem is coming up with a particular style to go to.should be a fun project though.

All you need is a few 2x4's and some 3" drywall screws. It won't be pretty, but it will work.

Hehehehe, yes when I saw that you had replied hoss I had this gripping fear that you would sugest I form it and then pour it out of concrete.......

I'm looking for a little bit more spohiticated than that. I have basic wood working skills.. Not a great selection of fancy woodworking tools but I'll get by... Plus I don't mind buying some tools if I need them for a project.

In that case, you could always form it and then pour it out of concrete.

How about building it from 2X6's or 2X8's and adding some veneer to make it pretty?

Also, adding some old barnwood (maybe a headboard and footboard), if you can get your hands on it would be cool.

Well I made a bed a while ago. So don't do what I did. I had to do some upgrades to it. Stupid thing squeaked. That does not go over well during a full moon.
