Broke down--Where to find parts for older Ford Backhoe?
Hey guys, I have an old ford backhoe- 75 model 550 I think. Has a great engine in it and is still a good part time farm machine. Anyhoo, I had to bury one of my mules with it yesterday and after I finished (Thank God) I broke the shaft in one of hydraulic steering cylinders and need to replace it. What sites would any of you recommend to find good parts for old machinery- without getting robbed of course.

So you just need a new steering cylinder or at a minimum a new ram for said cylinder?
You could probably take the cylinder off and take it to a hydraulic shop and they will propably have a new one they could swap you. More likely you just broke the eyelet off the end of the cylinder right??
It can likely be welded back onto the ram.
If that fails, go to a New Holland dealer, they will be able to fix you up with the factory part.
Good luck!

thanks tool. I broke the shaft inside of the cylinder. I'm going to try an old machinery junkyard about an hour from me first I guess. I know some parts are unavailble to me from New Holland as it is so old, but I bet your right, I can probably get that as they may use same cylinder on other equipment too.

you can get the numbers off the cylinder and get that part ordered from pretty much any machine shop that deals in hydraulics. most welding shops can get that part, but most liekly will not stock any hydraulic cylinder parts other than fittings and hose. That is how my brother's shop is.

We had a broken steering cylinder on a 140G grader at work , hit a car or something , we bought it broken , it tore the whole front end out from under the grader and bent the main beam, the hydraulic shop just made a new rod on the lathe...
On Edit -- I can get you some phone numbers of places we use at work to get parts when Cat , or John Deere , Komatsu , etc want WAY to much for the part... If you want the numbers PM me and let me know.

Try asking your question over at this site www.tractorbynet.com
I'm sure they can hook you up with a parts supplier.

The place we use for parts is located in Maine , so it's not TOO far from your location, I am just north of them , few hours across the border into NB.

Get the part numbers if you can. Does this sound right?
