I've seen the same mentality from all races wrt to others. I realize it may not be a popular view, but as long as we keep institutionalizing racism with 'minority-only' scholarships, alternate admissions criteria for different races at colleges, affirmative action, etc., it won't go away any time soon.
Friends should be judged on personalities, workers on their capabilities and work ethics, students on their abilities, and regardless, strangers should be respected. Nationality, color, weight, gender, etc. shouldn't play a role in judging the value of a person. Period.

i'm ukranian, and holy smokes did i ever get a hard time growing up when i was young , makes you stronger though, gave me bigger shoulders and helped me tune my sence of humour i guess although sometimes i just wanted to pop guys in the jaw for the jokes i used to hear, i had to learn how to laugh with them and start thinking faster and gettin witty comebacks. when my great gandparents first moved here they had to change our last name spelling from czornej cause people would overcharge them for seed, equipment and just about anything, and my dad was telling me that in school they would wack you with a yard stick if they caught you speaking ukraininan.

I often joke about racism because racism is a joke.
That said, there is some validity to a lot of stereotypes because they help us deal with the world. From our childhood years, we are always forming stereotypes that we use the rest of our lives. Water is wet. Snakes aren't good. etc etc.
But not ALL snakes are bad or dangerous, are they? No, many are very helpful. Yet, we often teach our kids to avoid them because it's possible for them to get hurt by one, and they aren't mature enough to exercise judgment as to which are good and which are bad. Heck, many us adults still lack the knowledge as to which are good and bad, so we just lump all snakes together.
This is part of how we are wired as human beings. It's in our nature to pre-judge based on our life experiences.
Another example would be with gay people. Many would say that I stereo type gays, but the simple fact is that gay people often exhibit distinct identifying characteristics that simply can't be ignored--usually speech (lisps, word selections), manner of dress, hairstyle, whatever. Is this ALWAYS the case? No. It can't be, because "all generalizations are false" But it's correct enough times that it becomes a useful means of identifying people.
I'm delighted and honored when I meet someone who doesn't fit into any stereotype. I love it when I meet black "nerds" that love classical music, or white people that listen to R&B and Jazz, gays with no lisp or Cold Play CDs, or Hispanics that don't speak Spanish and are in the country legally-- all are people that don't fit in with many common stereotypes.
That said, I always found it amusing that so many people fit the stereotype. Where is it written that if you are a gay man you have to be effeminate and whiny? Or that if you are black you have so have shiny rims, big wheels, and a stereo with too much bass?
In the end, it's all just a humorous commentary on human nature how we are assimilated into various cultural groups, how and where we find acceptance, and how these different cultural groups interact.
So what's the difference between stereotyping/prejudging and real racism? Racism has to do with assigning WORTH, while stereotping is simply an observation of behavior patterns. There's nothing racist about saying that "hispanics in my area tend to put wheels on their cars that are tiny and stick way out." However, if you make the statement to ridicule someone---THEN that is racism. Admittedly, it's a fine line-- but a difference just the same.
Be proud to be an Asian Diesel Guy. I'd suggest a sticker for your truck that has rice in the middle of the international
"no" symbol, just to be safe

Hey I'm a white guy with too much bass in my radio, Big 4 wheel drive truck with long cb antenna going on in the near future. Been trying to get my wife to let me put spinners on her durango but she keeps saying no. What sterotype do I fit in. In my Beetles cd player i have David Allen Coe, Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard, and Hank Williams Jr. What sterotype do I fit in?

I must admit when I was younger, (I am now 29 so were not talking ancient history here) you could have called me a racist. I didn't care for, or have anything nice to say about any other racial, linguistic or alternate life style group. Now that I matured and joined the real world I can truly see how wrong my previous attitude was. Living in Montreal you are exposed to just about every race on the planet on a daily basis. There are a few streets you can drive down and transition from Asian neighborhoods to African, Hispanic, Jewish, Arab, Italian, Greek, all in the space of a few city blocks. Being a service electrician I have had to work for and with all of these groups and there is no doubt in my mind that there are bad people in any group. I truly believe every one just wants a fair shot at a comfortable life style and a safe place to live. Looking back I am ashamed and embarrassed by my youthful behavior. I now try learn how to say "hello" in as many languages I can, it is amazing how much respect and pleasant attitude you can get from people when you show respect to them in the first place.
Sorry for the long post but hope someone might read it, change their attitude and see what a nicer place the world can be when you let go of preconceived ideals and truly get to know someone of another culture.

Frank Zappa - Trouble Every Day Lyrics
Well I'm about to get sick
From watchin' my TV
Been checkin' out the news
Until my eyeballs fail to see
I mean to say that every day
Is just another rotten mess
And when it's gonna change, my friend
Is anybody's guess
So I'm watchin' and I'm waitin'
Hopin' for the best
Even think I'll go to prayin'
Every time I hear 'em sayin'
That there's no way to delay
That trouble comin' every day
No way to delay
That trouble comin' every day
Wednesday I watched the riot . . .
Seen the cops out on the street
Watched 'em throwin' rocks and stuff
And chokin' in the heat
Listened to reports
About the whisky passin' 'round
Seen the smoke and fire
And the market burnin' down
Watched while everybody
On his street would take a turn
To stomp and smash and bash and crash
And slash and bust and burn
And I'm watchin' and I'm waitin'
Hopin' for the best
Even think I'll go to prayin'
Every time I hear 'em sayin'
That there's no way to delay
That trouble comin' every day
No way to delay
That trouble comin' every day
Well, you can cool it,
You can heat it . . .
'Cause, baby, I don't need it . . .
Take your TV tube and eat it
'N all that phony stuff on sports
'N all the unconfirmed reports
You know I watched that rotten box
Until my head begin to hurt
From checkin' out the way
The newsman say they get the dirt
Before the guys on channel so-and-so
And further they assert
That any show they'll interrupt
To bring you news if it comes up
They say that if the place blows up
They will be the first to tell,
Because the boys they got downtown
Are workin' hard and doin' swell,
And if anybody gets the news
Before it hits the street,
They say that no one blabs it faster
Their coverage can't be beat
And if another woman driver
Gets machine-gunned from her seat
They'll send some joker with a brownie
And you'll see it all complete
So I'm watchin' and I'm waitin'
Hopin' for the best
Even think I'll go to prayin'
Every time I hear 'em sayin'
That there's no way to delay
That trouble comin' every day
No way to delay
That trouble comin' every day
Hey, you know something people?
I'm not black
But there's a whole lots a times
I wish I could say I'm not white
Well, I seen the fires burnin'
And the local people turnin'
On the merchants and the shops
Who used to sell their brooms and mops
And every other household item
Watched the mob just turn and bite 'em
And they say it served 'em right
Because a few of them are white,
And it's the same across the nation
Black and white discrimination
Yellin' "You can't understand me!"
'N all that other jazz they hand me
In the papers and TV and
All that mass stupidity
That seems to grow more every day
Each time you hear some nitwit say
He wants to go and do you in
Because the color of your skin
Just don't appeal to him
(No matter if it's black or white)
Because he's out for blood tonight
You know we got to sit around at home
And watch this thing begin
But I bet there won't be many live
To see it really end
'Cause the fire in the street
Ain't like the fire in the heart
And in the eyes of all these people
Don't you know that this could start
On any street in any town
In any state if any clown
Decides that now's the time to fight
For some ideal he thinks is right
And if a million more agree
There ain't no Great Society
As it applies to you and me
Our country isn't free
And the law refuses to see
If all that you can ever be
Is just a lousy janitor
Unless your uncle owns a store
You know that five in every four
Just won't amount to nothin' more
Gonna watch the rats go across the floor
And make up songs about being poor
Blow your harmonica, son!
Well I'm about to get sick
From watchin' my TV
Been checkin' out the news
Until my eyeballs fail to see
I mean to say that every day

I think this actually makes you deeper seated and more respected within the diesel community. You came in with the patience and tolerance for those who wouldn't accept you. You also came here with the courage to show your passion for the almighty diesel within a prodominately white community. I salute you and hope all fellow diesel enthusiasts will try to attract more diversity into this family. Wasn't the diesel a minority in the performance sector at one time? Anyone can see the beauty in raw power and black smoke.

First of all, desertram800, thanks for your service! Being former USMC, I will concede it to be fact, the MC is a dept. of the Navy..... but without a doubt, it's the MEN's Dept. I spent almost 18 of my 24 + yrs in the MC in V. Bch.
I think HOHN had a very intelligent post and I'll just dovetail on to what he already correctly said. Some may say that stereotyping is a bad thing or it is not the politically correct thing to do. I don't believe stereotyping equates to racism and like HOHN suggested, stereotyping goes wrong when a person's worth is determined based on the attitude toward the stereotype.
Like some have already suggested, we all fall within a particular stereotype whether it's due to our nationality, region of the world we hail from, religious group we choose to belong to, clubs we choose to belong to, sexual preferences and even color of hair (are not blondes stereotyped? lol). Being Polish, I grew up hearing all the typical Polock jokes because of the stereotype that Poles' are the brightest bulbs on the trees..... sometimes I don't think I've dispelled that stereotype. When a person joins a certain group (club, religious, sexual, etc.) it's because he/she wants to be indentified with those individuals and their values. I think most of us can, and do, have fun with stereotyping because we choose not to assign worth to a person based on the stereotype.
Without a doubt, certain ethnic groups have been wrongly discriminated against based solely on their ethnicity. I think discrimination is a form of mental abuse (it's a form of bullying) and the people who do this have evil in their hearts. So discrimination will only go away, unfortunately, when the heart of every man is changed. I'm not a fan at all of quotas; I believe quotas promote discrimination because it doesn't value an individual based on character and/or proficiency.
Like others have said, I'll treat anyone like I want to be treated..... as a human being created equal in the eyes of God.
BTW, based on the bulk of these posts, I think I'm in the right crowd I want to be identified as.

BTW, based on the bulk of these posts, I think I'm in the right crowd I want to be identified as.

i dont know why people think insults are funny. Southerners are insulted by Northerners & visa versa,,i dont think its racism that makes people do these things, i dont believe you can hate someone without knowing them. it their way of entertaining..just ignore them.
