Yeah, I saw that on another site.
After I took a closer look, I cant help but to wonder if thats not a doctored photo.
The "black out" seems to be darker than the surrounding are that is naturally dark.
There is not a single cloud in the picture... North, South, East or West.
And there is not "Morning" or "Evening" in the photo either.
The far West is almost Alaska and the far East of the photo is well into the Atlantic.
Thats a lot of area. I would think that the sun would be visible, at least a little, in either the West or the East.
Regardless, it is a cool photo.
Rich.

Re: Another Urban Legend?
A buddy of mine at work has that pic on his computer desktop - cept all the lights are on! He told me that it is a composite photo that made it so clear and bright.
Just talked to a couple of Aunts in the Detroit area yesterday and they were without electricity for about 30 hours. Looks like lotsa lights are on in their "neighborhoods" in that photo.
I'd bet its a doctored photo. An artist rendition maybe??

I also took a good look at the photo and came to the same conclusion as some of you. It just does not look "right". But still a very interesting photo. Have seen other photos in the past of earth from space at night. They were composite pictures.

Makes one wonder about the picture. I am located in the Bruce Peninsula between Lake Huron and Georgian Bay. The picture shows the lights to be on where I am when they were definitely off at the time the picture was taken

Lansing Michigan was out too, but it's showing light. I'm not even sure that some of the areas that are showing light, ever HAD light. There seems to be a lot mor than I think there should be in Northern Michigan. I'm sure it's the same in other parts of the U.S., particularly the west.
