Beware when buying used parts on Internet Forums

I know this will start some neg issues, but I have to vent it out.

I had a Classified ad on this forum and TDR looking for a Van Aaken box for my '99 truck.
I bought one from this individual:

[EDITED: Personal info removed by Moderator]

The box came, but it was no good, truck acted up immeditely, went into limp mode and started Check Engine light immeditely, won't go over 1200rpm, the box is junk
Box is not even a Van Aaken, but it has a label with Auto Wurks diesel specialist, and that's it, no model, serial # etc.

[EDITED: Personal infor removed by Moderator]
I tried to get in contact with him and had no reply at all.

If you are looking to buy something online, beware, check the individual or use a way to get your money back if something doesn't work.

If somebody knows the individual, give him a pat on his back for me wishing him "good job", but I will eventually get down there and do it myself

Sorry to hear about your misfortune. Buying used electronics is pretty risky. Personally, I won't buy anything electronic without witnessing that it operates properly first. But even then, I realize that it could quit at any time without warning. I always treat used electronics/electrical items like they were a light bulb; they could work one time but not the next.
I would keep hounding the guy to make it right for you. For one thing it is mis-represented property if you recieved something that wasn't the item that you purchased online.
Good Luck!

Thumbs down

That sucks. I have had two good experiences on this forum with private sales. I would keep bugging the guy (EDIT).
J.Jones is probably right about the buying of USED Electonics, but on the other hand you didn't even get what you thought you were buying (working or not). Shame on di-honest people. Seems that most members here are generally cool and reasonable in nature.

Good Luck.

Moderator should be able to allow the use of the username (at least), so no-one else smoked on any of his classifieds? Not like he was giving out the guy's address??!

Two sides to every story, all we see here is just the one side.

I certainly don't condone the actions of anyone who sells something that doesn't work or is misrepresented, but I do know that trashing that person in the forums is the wrong way to handle it.

This is a legal matter between these two individuals and it needs to be handled in that manner, fighting it out here in the forums isn't the way to handle the matter.

I learned once buying used "VAN AAKEN" boxes--I dont anymore.
I got took for about 150 bucks.
The box you had was probably a re-labled VA box (many were).

I asked Van Aaken about warranty and they were kind in the email and politely told me there was no fixing or replacing to it. Not even a trade in value.

Great bunch of guys over there.
Needless to say; I will never support or buy any Van Aaken products.

Actually, his address was given but was then rightfully "moderated" out of the post.

i see no reason why you should erause the name of the person that sold the bad product. If it was the buyers fault then the seller can and most certainlty will state a rebuttle. It would be nice who to look out for.

Thats why I always pay with Paypal if possible. It gives some protection against situations like this.

One thing to remember is that should a situation like this make it to court, anything posted in a public forum like this one can be used as evidence against one or both parties. Putting all that stuff out there, just isn't a smart thing to do for either party in the long run.

I know my methods may not always seem like the best course of action to everyone, but my intent is to not make things worse than they already are. I hope these guys will be able to work it out so they can both end up satisfied, that can't happen if everybody steps in and starts slinging mud

You know, maybe I'm just too old, or maybe I'm just too gullible, but whenever I've sold items to fellow forum members, I've always shipped the item to them (on my dime) after we've agreed on a price and told them to make sure it's what they expected before they send me the check for the price and shipping.

I've never been left hanging yet. I suspect my time is coming, though.....

I just sold my EZ on a TDR classified. I shipped it within 24hrs of receiving payment, and I had UPS do the packing so that if it didn't work, UPS could be held liable.

The EZ was in perfect working order when I took it off my truck, brushed it off, and shipped it. Now, the buyer gets it on his truck and finds that the EZ disables his cruise control for some reason! He takes the EZ off, and the CC works fine. He puts it back on and BAM-- no CC.

So now he's probably frustrated, and might be thinking that I pawned off a bad unit on him. I would never do such a thing, as I believe there should be a "code of honor" so to speak among CTD enthusiasts.

What can *I* do as a seller? I worked perfectly for me-- no CC issues at all. Am I responsible for the issue? Is EDGE? Is the buyer (caveat emptor)??

I feel bad for him, but I have done nothing wrong. What if the issue isn't the EZ (though it appears to be)?

I'm really hoping Edge steps up and shows the customer service they are known for. It would help me sleep better knowing a guy didn't get hosed buying something from me, and that Edge stood behind their product.

Any suggestions as to what I can do besides referring the buyer to Edge? I have done numerous TDR and DTR searches, and never heard of an Edge EZ causing the CC to no longer work.

Please help!

Justin

i have had about 6 transactions on this site. Never had a problem yet. Of course, I have only bought and sold with people that frequent this site. Not the ones that show up once to post thier ad, and never post in the forums.
