Best way to get tires/rims shipped?

I want to get 4 rims and tires shipped from alabama to maryland. UPS/Fed-ex want $80 a tire...

anyway to get this done any cheaper? should i try to find a small company who does hotshotting etc type work, or just deal with the fact that shipping will cost almost as much as the wheels im buying?

i was expecting to pay about 120-150 for shipping...but not $240+

I recently had a custom bumper shipped from Alberta to Quebec, I don't know the exact mileage but lets just say it's not a trip you would make on foot. All the major transport companies didn't want to know anything about it because of its size and weight but Greyhound accepted it no problem. It took them a little under a week and the charged 170$ Canadian, I think that's a more than fare price. Maybe if you get your tire vendor to put them in two boxes of two wheels it might work out any way it won't cost you anything to call and find out.

Take a ride to Alabama!!

Freight won't be any cheaper than UPS with the cost of fuel these days. Where in Alabama are they? I'll be heading to Birmingham the 3rd week in February.....

Is that with fedex ground? How big/heavy are they?

I would expect something like $25/wheel/tire combo with ground.

Quick math says 4 tires x $80/ea = $320 in shipping; you might be better of paying a little more for something local and save the shipping costs. May not be worth an 800 mile ride down there to pick them up.

Thinking aloud here....
Are there extra charges due to it being "heavy or oversize"? If so, could the shipping costs be reduced if the wheels and tires were separated into smaller and lighter individual pieces?

What about a regular freight company? They probably won't deliver to your front door, but there are plenty of freight yards in Baltimore that they will deliver to.

Try those out and see what you get.... I would think they should be cheaper than 80/tire....

Do you work for a company that does a lot of freight shipping? If you do, talk to the recieving dept. Often times they can get you a huge discount (sometimes 50% or more) on freight shipping through their corprate accouts... and that will aslo get it to a dock thats convenient for you.

If you can wait till the weekend of February 17th I'll get them for nothing. You will just have to come to Woodbridge,Va. to pick them up.....
Are these at a friend's or family member's house?

a guy on another forum is selling them. good price but adding in 200-300 in shipping ridiculous. i doubt he wants to hold them for 2 months either.

i tried a hotshotters forum...what a joke. the first guy to reply basically said they are too good to throw 375lbs on a load thats headed that direction for an extra $100 or so. im not paying someone to drive 720 miles just to deliver my stuff...but $100 to throw them in the truck when they are delivering a trailer or something is reasonable to me...but not to those guys.

seems like you could take the money that you would spend on the wheels and shipping and then get you a better set that is local.

well it was an awesome deal...4 new rims for me, and 4 almost new tires for my dads truck which needs tires pretty soon, same tire and size he has on it now. and he would have had them for the cost of one new tire. just doesnt look like it will happen now.
