Beltway "sniper" verdict Guilty, Death
Jury returned a guilty of all counts verdict last week for the 1st of the pair to stand trial.
Today, they returned a death penalty sentence.
Of course this is grounds for an immediate appeal. >
The younger one's trial is still taking place.
It ain't over yet, but it's getting closer.

Too bad we're so nice in this country...
It would be great if they just moved from the courthouse to the gas chamber! ;D
Or have an electric chair in the courthouse and when the verdict is given, flip the switch! ;D

I think that the right to appeal is one of the most important positions in the civilized world. Naturally it can make you mad to see cases like the beltway sniper- but on the other hand there are enough cases IMHO that proved the right to appeal worthwhile.

I see no problem with the right to appeal, especially in a Capital Murder case, and a Death Penalty sentence.
I have a problem with it dragging out 5 or 10 year's worth of appeals until "justice" is served.

Well, imagine living through these 5 or 10 years.. knowing they found you guilty in the first trial... and chances dwindling away. I wouldn't want to be in that position- but on the other hand I don't shoot at people..

Theoretically, Judge Millette could give him life in prison at sentencing, but that's very rare. Judge Millette's a sensible man (and my favorite of our 5 judges) so I'm certain death it is. Unfortunately for me, he's moving the trial back here to Manassas for sentencing - which means we get at least one day of press inundation - worse than the Bobbitt trial I'm sure!

Caught red-handed, no question of guilt.
Lottery to join the firing squad.
I'll buy the first ticket, and then some more.
End of state tax burden on the law abiding citizens.
Not very PC 'round here...... >

Was in Kenya in '98 for a bit. Got there on a Friday and was reading the paper about 3 guys who were found guilty of robbery (punishable by death there) Read on Monday's paper that they were dead. They don't waste any time there.

If the firing squad EVER comes back I will donate the first box of shells. As far as the automatic appeal, it shouldn't take more than a year. Far as I'm concerned, 18 months should be the longest ANYONE should be on death row. Eliminate the problems.

I only wish that our two snipers would have put up a fight and been killed rather than captured. It's costing us millions to prosecute them and the bills will continue to mount during the appeal process.
Their death sentence should be up to a year in prison with a randomly chosen day, of which they don't know which day, that they will be shot while going about their business. Maybe they can be winged a few times first, just so the magnitude of what they did can sink in a little.

Actually, I think things are going exactly right in the two trials, despite the cost. Our system caught the snipers, now it's trying them by the law, cautiously and legally. I agree that just killing them at capture would be cheaper, but it's not the American way!

I like Ron White's take on it.....if three credible witness saw you do it, no automatic appeal, straight to the death chamber. Most states are trying to eliminate the death penalty, and Texas is puttin' in an express lane!
I wish California would do that too. That'd put a dent in the budget deficit......
