We had something like similar happen like that at my house. I'm still living at home and my room is the basement, I certainly can't hear anything from down there. Well about 2 months ago at 100am on a saturday, I heard my puppy, 135 lb Rottweiler named Boomer, start to stir around and growl. Next thing I know my brother comes flying into my room saying he thinks there is someone up on our roof, trying to look into his room. Him and his girlfriend were watching a movie at the time and he happened to look up and see the outline of a person. Now, being the protective older brother I am, I went up stairs to check on my 16 yr old sister. I thought this guy might be a peeping tom or some sicko trying to look in on her and found my brother instead. My sister was fine, so my brother and I went out side along with my puppy. I went around the back of the house with my spot light and shined the roof and sure enough there was a person laying down up there on our second floor roof. I yelled at him and he got up and ran away from me. He ended up jump from the second floor to the garage roof then leaped off the garage. He landed in really wet grass and left a nice imprint in the ground. He booked out of our yard. Now supposably this guy is my brother's girlfriends ex, and he's not right in the head. I guess the guy stalks her and calls her all the time and finally got daring enough to climb up on our house. next time he's up there I'm calling the cops before i go outside and i'm letting both of the rotts outside, that'll scare him. I just don't understand why people do things like that, but then again people can be very strange.

Something for you to ponder for a moment, that guy may NOT have been alone and you left your wife in a dangerous position by leaving her alone when you chased that guy down the block.

Remember, your first and ONLY concern should be to protect your family. Let the police do the chasing stuff Grab your pistol and STAY in the house where you can protect your family.

I am happy things worked out well for you

I knew exactly where he or they were going when he hopped over the fence as there was only one way to go (still on our property) and the area I would see him again would give me about 20 yards distance between myself and him and when I did see him he was about 30 yards away by that time. I felt the least I could do was make him aware that I knew he was here and that I did see him or maybe get lucky and even recognize him . Maybe this will prevent him from coming back. My pistol in my hand was for my protection and comfort and I knew that I would have plenty of time to retreat back into my home if he turned on me. I never intended to point or threaten him with it or chase him with gun in hand, nor did I. In fact he probably never even knew I had it. The first thing the police asked for was a description of him and what he was wearing. If I had not done what I did I would not have been able to give them any type of description.

The town that we live in is about 7500 people. I know most of the police officers as I have been with the Fire Department for many years. I knew that once I left my property it was not a good idea to be carrying my weapon in my hand, that’s why I left behind and grabbed my cell phone.

There are probably several different things I could have done differently. Would I do it again? He was in my comfort zone with who knows with what kind of intentions.

Thanks everyone for your kind words and great advice. It’s helpful to vent once in a while and I am looking forward to getting a good sleep tonight.

came running back to the bedroom saying that someone was in our back yard which is enclosed with a 5 foot wooden fence. By the time I got out of bed he was on our back deck. Standing in my shorts I ran back to the bedroom and threw on a shirt and some pants and grabbed my pistol. By the time I got back to the patio he was over the fence and heading to the side, meanwhile my wife is on the phone with the police.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Not knocking you here, but next time leave your bedroom with your weapon the 1st time, so when you get to the back door you are ready to defend yourself.

I am glad it worked out for you.

If a few more of these( ) would get a dose of lead, more of them would stay away from places they don't belong

Scary. I have no doubt that if that situation happened to me, I would have done whatever to protect my family. Something similar happened to me years back though. I was about 16 or so at the time. Got home at around 4 in the afternoon with my mother from the grocery store. We live in a nicer side of town, so I rarely thought of anything happening. My house backs up to the desert as it is on the edge of our development..anyway, walk into the house and see some bum chilling on our back porch. Just sitting by our pool, no joke. I grab a pistol and walk out and ask him, using choice words of course, what he was doing? He claimed he got lost...and yea, decided to take a sit on our patio eh? Called the cops and they arrested him. I pretty much sat there with him at gunpoint until they got there. Scared the heck out of my mother. No way some guy was going to invade my family like that without me putting up one heck of a fight. If he was in the house, it could have turned out a LOT worse.

Yes he could have been just some drunken dude being real stupid. To get to us he had to go through a field first. Then he could have just walked around to the front where there was no fence, if he was just passing through. It’s just freaky regardless what he was doing.

thats why i am planning on a six wire electric cattle fence and a couple of big hungry dogs in my future. portland is getting to close. hate to say but the wire keeps them off your place to start with my brothers farm has six dogs and the cattle wire around it and its just easier to go to the next place to steal.

Wink Glad you are here to speak out! ya, get some rest now!

crime of opportunity.

walk in to the suburbs where people feel safe; usually unlocked cars or houses, 2-4AM when most are sleeping and carry away the purses, check book, whatever portable item....commonly less than 200 bucks. but yeah- you get robbed of your peace, calm, etc.... PLEASE calmly state FRONT DOOR, NOW or whichever exit is closest, obvious! let them run, see your gun, baseball bat, golf club (they really hurt!), big fists.. point is your presence is enough to thwart the opportunistic burglar. turn the lights on, have someone dial 911 while looking at the perp....it's property- tax deductible too.

PREVENTION: trim bushes away from window sill views, motion lights, porch lights on all night, garbage cans in dark walkways, lock de doors and cars!
purses, wallets? find a place near the bathrooms (crooks are lazy) not the coat area. keyed dead bolts, screens with lightweight aluminum grills over the access areas at three, four and five feet up. daughter likes the window open? use a darkening blind angled to shift the breeze on her but no one can see in the room. pay attention to the guy on a bike that isn't going from point A to "b", he is rolling by the area to case the houses.

if I am missing a tool that's what i think first before i admit to being a mindless idiot. (doggone it! someone stole my crescent wrench!!)

YOU DID US ALL A GREAT FAVOR BY REMINDING US THAT WE ARE OUR BEST DEFENSE! thank you, and get some control back, then get a good rest!

I'm all for you haveing a gun in your house for protection, but i agree with the others, it's better to stay inside. ANYTHING is possible. Say he was running from a cop and a cop came over the fence to find you with a gun? Say the crook shot first and didn't bother with questions. You can practice every day, but somebody may just be better. Or like Top mentioned, you get him cornered, but his buddy doesn't like your idea. Maybe just a lost drunk or teen and now you bring a gun into the equation. Glad it turned out ok though, but if he didn't know you were onto him, the cops might have found him and you couldn't have to worry about it again. Not trying to upset anybody, just some food for thought.

Besides having the gun for obvious reasons. You might want to invest in some dyed pepper spray that will shoot a good distance.
You can hose that dude down next time he sets foot on your property with the dyed pepper spray and wait for the cops to get there...chances are he wont be running away like normal.

good friends of ours live in very rural part of oregon and hwy is a good 200 yards from house. middle of the night three guys banging on door saying they are broke down and need phone. well my buddy tells them that he is not letting them in and he called the local cops to help them out. these guys wigged out so my buddy gets his shotgun and stands next to the door and when it gets quiet pumps a round in nice and noisy. these guys head for the road and the cops catch up with them and come to my buddies house all three were on the run from a prison break . cops commended him for not opening door to let them in or to go out and chase them.
