What is a "gated community" ??

We have two big gates at the end of the drive-way that I shut when the horses are loose in the yard; does that count ??

We have two Border Collies, one that alerts me to a strangers presence, while the sneaky one slips up and takes the seat out of his britches, along with a chunk of hide.

Also, one real nosy neighbor that will actually jump in her truck and follow any strange vehicle in and back out, writing down their license-number, make and color, time of day, how many, etc.; I would put her ahead of any cop I ever knew.

Another neighbor is a little on the wacko side and will fire his shotgun at shadows in the night; it's not at all unusual to hear him blast away at 2:AM.

Anyone that gets past them deserves a few gallons of gas or whatever.

So do you have a switch on your tailgate, or a proximity sensor?

I have contacts on the doors and hood and I have magnetic contacts on both the tailgate and camper door. I also have an external contact so I can leave the door open and alarm whatever is sticking out the back like a ladder or? Oh and there is a shock sensor and a glass break (audio discriminator) to monitor the cab.

I now have a high end Viper Alarm that I have modified slightly with the inputs and of course the sirens.

In addition there are also measures taken so the truck cannot be started.

I used to install commercial alarm systems so I have some pretty heavy-duty stuff I am playing with.

You guys are funny with all the security stuff. lol My wife gets so worked up so easy if we had any cameras she would always be watching them. If I had more land and didnt live in a gated community I would probibly get some though.

The system:
My system has 4 monitors, there is a 20” LCD monitor sitting on my left side my right now that displays all 13 views and is the master and is mouse driven, to the right I have a smaller 9” that displays the backup system views.

There is also 20” in the bedroom hung in the corner adjacent to the television so you can lay in bed and see all 13 cameras as well as the living room has its equal slave.

Both my wife and daughter can run the system and it is not uncommon to wake up and find her checking what had gone on the previous night.

When I first installed the cameras (I started out with only 4 cameras) everyone said I was paranoid but now sadly I am the center of attraction by the entire neighborhood including the local Sheriff.

Let me first say I am not paranoid, I have been working in electronics for the past 50 years and have done a lot of work in CCTV, security systems and telecommunications to mention a few and have a over stuffed garage as well and so you should all know me by now I overkill on everything I do, sooo

I actually have 2 systems and a total of 13 cameras with several looking hundreds of feet away in total darkness so I am constantly getting calls from my neighbor in the middle of the night asking me to check her house because she heard a noise.

10 of the cameras are zero Lux with infrared illuminators and can see in total darkness with my newest one up to 300 feet away and 3 of them are Day/Night cameras with mechanical filters that give me a decent picture on a moonless night, they are all different brands and I am constantly changing them out for something new.

The cameras range from about $200.00 for the cheapest one up to $400.00 I just paid for the long range one.

The primary DVR that I built is a Pentium-4 PC based and is a 16-channel 480 frame so all of the cameras record at 30-frame or close to live and will record for about 3 ½ weeks continuously on 1 terabyte of hard drive until it overwrites and the Secondary one is a commercially made 4 channel Stand Alone that is only my backup.

Both of them are connected to my network printer so I can print a hard copy and both are IP addressable meaning I can log on to my system anywhere in the world and view and control my system.

I had gone to my son’s house and called my wife and told her to check out a suspicious car I had seen pull up and she said, “How did you do that?”

Both of the DVR’s, camera power supplies, 1) 20” LCD monitor are on their own dedicated 2KW UPS so the power can go out and the system will still be up.

I am constantly in my attic pulling new lines for something; I currently have about 2000 feet of RG-59 coax for the camera feeds.

Here is another view of the guy’s car; this is the frame shot I gave the Sheriff.

Glad to see that your alarm works well for you. Stealing tools from a man is taking his legs out from under him. Hope you catch him. And what type of alarm do you use?

About 15 years ago someone broke into my truck and had stolen my tools, almost $10,000 dollars worth in 3 toolboxes, a lot of specialty tools I am sure they didn’t even know what they were and probably sold them for $50 worth of crack.

what sort of video monitoring system do you have? we have been entertaining the idea of getting a few...

You don’t have to start out with something as elaborate as I have but for about $500.00 you can set up a decent system.

You can get a good 4-channel Triplex system for about $250.00 then you need to buy a hard drive for about $100.00 then the cameras start around $100.00 each depending on what you want to look at.

Stand-alone DVR’s go anywhere from $200.00 up to about $2000.00 for a 16-channel that will burn AVI files directly to a DVD.

You can plug this into your television for your monitor.

I have set up several systems for people and used the PIP on their wide screen so they could watch their property in the corner while they watch TV.

A Triplex system lets you review back over the recording while it is still recording the present.

When I set op a camera I use a wide angle to view the area and then a narrow angle (zoom) to get recognition of the target. This is how it is easy to end up with so many cameras on a system.

I hope I did not boar you to death you with the explanation of my surveillance system.

Most likely scrap-iron thieves.

Behind our shop in town, not at home where the dogs are, I had a BIG pile of odds and ends of metal, mostly in case I needed any of it for welding projects; the other night, thieves cleaned it out, along with a good Dana-60 rear that I had laying there, so it was more than one guy.

A neighbor went to his other farm to find he had been hit; they even stripped every last bit of the 12/2 wiring from all of his barns and outbuildings, right up to the plugs and switches.

The law, if they weren't in on it, could stop this stealing right at the source = the scrap buyers, if they would; those guys weighing and buying this stuff know good and well when it is stolen; they buy it anyway.

Scrap prices just took a pretty big dive over the last three weeks. Thefts should now start to decline. Also PA just passed a law requiring recordable proof of identification being required starting in December for all scrap metal sales over $100.

I love how people dont think our older trucks have alarms in them. I put an alarm in mine and people get a scare if they try to mess with it. I have 4 vibration sensors on my truck so you cant even really touch it wihtout it going off. Good thing you had one. hopefully he gets what he deserves.

i have been out of town most this week and i have a friend of mine stay out at the farm while i am gone. i park any rigs with anything of value ( diesel farm tank tools. ) in my locked shed. the locked shed just keeps them from seeing whats to rob. my neighbor was hit last month. this winter i am installing a seven wire cattle fence around my 40 acre place with and electric fence box. i want to find a device that will alarm if they cut the wire. i have two small inhouse dogs going for a third outside dog after the fence is in. extra bonus is all those horsey folks won't walk onto the place and fall off and sue me. good job on the alarm just remeber that stuff is always replacable you aren't. i have been broke into twice in thirty years of living there.

This is what I caught with one of my local cameras.

You need to watch it carefully near the end.
