If the person is a chain smoker I can understand it.
The average person, no.
Either way, it should be spelled out in the warrantee materials.
BTW. Have any of you ever seen what cigarette smoke does to the insides of a computer. I have taken a computer owned by a heavy smoker apart. It is just plain hasty.

Its been a really long time since I truly laughed out loud over something I read on one of these web sites. Stan thanks that link is just too funny. The sad part is, it is not intended to be funny (or at least I don't think it is) and shows how way out of whack some people can get. On a serious note, they should do like hotels and rental car companies and charge a smoke cleaning fee but they should still repair the stupid computer.

I've done plenty of computer repair in my days and I will attest smoke destroys computers. It was also ridiculously disgusting opening up a computer and having a sticky orangish/brownish film on everything. It was even worse with heavy smokers that just touching the case on the outside was a hazmat situation.
Tar conducts electricity, destroys fan bearings, and prevents heat dissipation. = KILLS electronics. Even everyday smokers.
There's nothing wrong with being accountable for your actions.

I clean trucks for a living, all I have to say is the first truck I ever did was a Volvo, I though it had at off with tan interior that was just dirty, and smelled like smoke. The truth was it had a white interior, its is crazy what smoke sticks to and how much it changes the color.

My wife who was a computer tech, Network Admin & now an ISO confirms that smoke does kill computers. She cleaned up 2 of computers for friends of ours here at home. the couple both are heavy smokers & even though she was able to clean them they were nasty inside. She said there was still residue on the mother boards & that with time they would fail.

I used to work at a Chrysler dealer & we had a customer who would regularly bring in a 78 horizon for service. He smoked like a chimney. Every time I got that car it took me longer to clean the heavy film off the windows so I could see well enough to safely test drive that car than the service took.
I have worked on one computer from an owner who smoked like that. The tar had ruined floppy drive and CD drive. As others mentioned, it was totally coated inside.
BTW . .I have almost no sense of smell & that car smelled like an ash tray inside to me!!

Had a buddy of mine that was a temp for a service center doing warranty repairs for Gateway. They got one in that was so horribly coated inside and out that they just bagged it, chucked it in the trash, and shipped a new one out. He said they did call HazMat in because they didn't know what it was that the system was coated in, and this was during the time when the anthrax scare was still a hot topic.
