Any of you all metal detect?

I'm looking at getting a new metal detector and wondering which one to get. I live on an old civil war battle site so I'd like to search for some relics. Along with the relics I'd like to look for coins/jewlery as well. Can you all recommend any? Right now I'm looking at the Garrett ACE 250. I'm not trying to spend over $400 or so. Thanks

Garrett is a good one. I had a White's I believe I lost in a split up. I'd like to dink around some old railroad/logging camps, but I'm not so sure I'll see it again.

I'll have to check in with my taxidrmist, in his spare time he loves hittin up the battlefields/ encampments to look for stuff. Amazing how frustrated he used to get when we tossed boxes of BB's in his fields........

That's just evil man. All you'd find in our yard is bottle caps.

I never have had to but a medal detector, I use the old Dowsing methode. I can find pipes, cables, and peices of metal by using two coat hangers.

And how is this done??? I've heard tales of people finding spots for wells with two sticks, but never heard the coat hanger trick...

A little different subject..... I realize that you are from Virginia, real close to Yankee land. It is not "you all" two words.... It's really "yall" one word

Yep, do it all the time. Got a Stihl 440 that finds every bit of metal there is in the tree.

No idea about the metal detector. But I thought the water locator subject was interesting. In Africa they use a glass coke bottle half filled with water. You set it on your open hand and walk around. When you're above water, it will tip over and fall off of your hand. I couldn't believe it, it actually works!

Thisi s off topic but my uncle had a guy find water with a divining rod one time. After sinking several thoudsand dollars in a 500 foot deep well and drilling into an abandoned coal mine, he told the guy not to lose the divining rod. It would be good kindling wood this winter.

Back on topic, I've heard you can use a metal detector to find metal in a tree before the chain saw does. Sounds like a good idea.
