American POW
So I have a question, and sorry if it offends anybody, im just curious..please tell me if it does and ill shut up! I heard on the news today that another American POW in Iraq was killed and the news just kinda sluffed it off like it was no big deal...well five minutes later that same newscaster was talking about the trials for the American Soldiers who tortured Iraqi POW's and made a big deal out of it....is it just me or is this unfair?

The "POW" was not a soldier if I remember correctly.
He was a "Peace Activist" who decided to place himself in the middle of a war zone.
Not exactly the brightest move to make.
While I feel sorry for his family's loss, he voluntarily placed himself in the position that got him in trouble, and ultimately cost him his life.
The terrorist news has only "Reported" his demise, to my knowledge there has been no proof yet.

From MSNBC.com:
You're correct, this was a Civilian contractor.
Would that make him a POW? or just a kidnap victim?
Wouldn't he still be in a combat zone because he chose to be?
And as a non-combatant?
Can a civilian company force someone to be in a hazardous duty area?
Just wondering.
Anyway you slice it, It's still not going to be a happy time in his family.
I thought about heading over once to help rebuild the Comm infrastructure.
The BIG $$$ that was promised if one signed on would have been nice, but not worth it to me.
BAGHDAD, Iraq - An Iraqi insurgent group said Thursday in an Internet posting that it killed a U.S. security consultant it had taken hostage. The claim’s authenticity could not be immediately verified.

To be given POW status, you have to be a soldier wearing a military uniform. If a contractor or civilian(or a soldier not in uniform for that matter) is captured, they are not afforded the protections of POW status under the Geneava convention. Scince we are fighting terrorists, anyone who gets captured is just "poop" out of luck.
